Today when I went to clean my new GBD I discovered that I couldn't get a pipe cleaner to pass. After closer inspection I discovered that the drill was way off center. Normally the first thing I do when a new pipe arrives is the pipe cleaner test, but this took so long to get to me, I just loaded it up and smoked it. The pipe smokes great, the three bowls I have smoked in it have smoked all the way down with no dottlle. That is very surprising considering the drilling of this pipe. If you zoom in on the photo you can see what I am talking about. I am going to use my dremel and see if I can do some adjusting to get a cleaner to pass. This just surprises me that this pipe was permitted to be sold as a Bronze Velvet. Bronze Velvet was one of GBD's higher line of pipes in 1984.

Nice looking pipe. I hope you get it to work.

One of the tips our local B&M gave us yesterday was to blow really hard through the stem. There may be a bit of debris in the shank. He said that Pete's are real bad about that.

It's not that Cyndi, look at the photo, the drill is WAY off center.

I dunno, really; but I think it smokes OK because the tobacco doesn't care where the draft hole enters the bowl -- radially, that is.
That looks like a really nice cross grain pipe ...probably has bird's eye grain on both sides. Personally, I'd keep it.

Personally, I'd be afraid to try to fix it if it already smokes well.
Sounds kind of risky to one who has no experience in that sort of thing.
Are you confident in your pipe repair skills?

Too bad, bout it is a beauty. Good luck with the repair.

Well being an experienced screw up, do not try to fix. Tried to on different things
and well junk pile. If the cosmetics is a problem, I say drink until everything lines
up and try to stay in that condition.
I would like to have that pipe and if someone gives me something of that quality,
than its unique. Keep it full of tobacco and no one will know. if they get that close
to seeit well then I hope the perfume is pleasing.
Man do not mess with it or send it to me. IT DON"T HURT NONE.

There is no fixing it. Where the airway of the stem and the airway for the shank are supposed to meet, is 1/8 offset! I just don't see how this pipe smokes at all. So I will just leave it as it is and be thankful!

I'd do the same Bob. Happy puffing.

Yep, definitely something to just smoke and enjoy! Great looking pipe, btw. I remember when it was gifted and the pics were pretty blurry.
I guess it's bound to happen, those in quality control are normal people too.

Believe it or not, I've seen that before! Draft hole goes straight down the stem, then is drilled off to the side in the shank.
There must have been a time when people experimented with offset drilling.
-
Bob, can you get a cleaner in the shank if the stem is off? If so, I wouldn't mess with it. I have often thought that an offset hole would lessen gurgle on some of my pipes where the hole is dead even and at the bottom of the bowl.

I don't even need to zoom in to see that draft hole being way off center! That said, I have a pipe that smokes great but the draft hole is like yours. I had to learn how to twist a pipe cleaner just the right way.

That's crazy, Bob. It DOES make you wonder how that was a Bronze Velvet with the draft hole off THAT much.

I've had some good luck with a needle file (Woodcraft store), that might improve the cleaner pass a bit, probably can't hurt. A dremel in the pipe is scary and takes a real firm hand...
That is a good looking pipe!

Some pipes defy common logic about "good" pipe design. I say leave it as-is (apparently you are) and enjoy it that way.

That was the very first thing I thought when I looked at the picture. That is 7 different kinds of crazy. Is there maybe any way that you could contact the folks at GBD? Is there any contact info on the web anywhere?
