SmokingPipes sent out their weekly update this afternoon, which included this new Caminetto. It is made from Kauri wood, a wood from New Zealand. The two pipes offered were already sold, so I don't know their price points. What do you think of the design/material?

Not gonna lie, that looks more like a pot smoking bowl/pipe shape than a traditional tobacco pipe.

From what I read the prototypes were Kauri. The one's made for the line they went back to briar.
I do agree with the fact that they look a little bit more like a pipe for the green...but the concept behind their creation I find interesting. Too early to tell, but great idea conceptually (visual artists + pipe maker) and the little touches done (i.e. one-of-a-kind splashing of the pipe box by Savethewall) are nifty ideas. If they come up with a more of a budgeted version...I might buy in.

+1 I think I would get stopped or pulled over if I was seen with that in my mouth.

The pictures of the two pipes are truly beautiful, and the video was fascinating. Can it be that someone has discovered a new wood out of which a truly great pipe can be made? one thing is certain: Caminetto certainly doesn't make junk, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out--price, quality, etc.

Reminds me of a medicine spoon my Grandmother had my Grandfather take to his anvil and scooped or bellyed it out to hold more medicine. Her home remixes were Kill or Cure, you ran when she took that spoon out.

I'm too "Mr. Conservative" on my pipe shapes for the shape to appeal to me. I thought those did look like briar!
The one-sided button still has me puzzled, I can't imagine that working. I primarily use the top ridge of the button to hold the pipe in place.
That is however thinking outside the box!

I've always wanted one of these style pipes. Seeing the new Caminetto makes me want one more.
Some more of the "upside down" pipes.

A couple of European vendors seem to have them. Prices are around a thousand euro -- about $1360 at today's rate.
I, too, am baffled by the lack of the top part of the button - you know, the part which most pipe smokers use to hold/dangle the pipe.

+2 I'm just too much of a traditionalist to go for huffing on a hash pipe. Nice grain though!
