Need Help - Peterson Meers Lined - Made in Ireland 65

Hello Gentlemen,
Would really appreciate if you can throw some light on my recent acquisition of this fabulous Meer lined Pete.

For whatever reason, the Shape 65 doesn't pop up often, new or estate.

It's made after 1949 (with Republic stamping).

It appears to either be a filter pipe or that piece is a broken "chimney" which screws into the stem. I suspect it is a filter.

I'll ask Ric to see if the pipe takes a filter. Do you think a new stain (of the same color) would be good for this pipe?

I frequently use what Dave (dmctk) calls a "stain wash" to rejuvenate a finish. Just wipe on very light coat of a similar shade and it really brightens up a pipe.
