Any of you oldtimers that spent tome in or around Nawlins, remember Holms Kitchen in the French Quarter , where you could get a plate of red beans & rice, some Andoule sausage, french bread, and a Barques root beer for 45cents.? Of course for me this was about 1967. So after this feast Id walk over to Cafe du Monde for a croissant & chicory and have a good long smoke by the River. Ah the good old days, they got up & went.

Directly across from Cafe DuMonde is a tiny shop called Cafe Beignet. Best breakfast stop ever. Get there early, though, it fills up fast. Down in the warehouse district, there's a restaurant called Cochon. They are a boucherie and a restaurant. It's absolutey incredible!

And get you a muffalatta from Central Grocery for lunch, and take a walk to the Tobacco Exchange on Exchange Place for a good after lunch pipe (or cigar).

Back in the day, before you could get Absinthe legally in bars there was an underground bar called Pravda that had quite the selection. You kinda just had to know when to go and where. Now, my favorite place is the Pirate Alley Cafe, in where else but Pirate Alley.

Payless Pipes is still hopping (I believe it's inside the Hilton on St. Charles. I've never been there as they're a little too over the top price-wise for me).
And Hobie is right: a lot of businesses have left. Many have just changed owners, changed names, but the soul of the city still runs through these businesses.
I still have memories of walking down to Ferrara's grocery and getting a roast beef po-boy on Friday's after high school let out. It breaks my heart that the place is now leveled.
If you guys are ever in town and want a tour or just a smoking buddy, let me know. I'm happy to oblige. This city runs through my veins, and I'm always happy to entertain.

Hey Cajunguy, that is a generous offer. I wish my circumstances would allow mw to take you up on it. I lived on Chartres about 5 minutes from Jackson Square for a short spell in the late 60s, and your city has always been a fascination to me. Used to walk from Chartres to the Jung Hotel, where I worked every day so I saw a good slice of it. Crescent City. Certainly has a distinct personality ( Personalities ). Kinda humid though. happy puffin.

I looked for the pipe shop on Chartres, used to be next to Paul Prudhomme's restaurant, Chez Paul. It isn't there anymore. The Epitome used to be on St. Louis St.: it isnt there anymore either. However, Tobacco Exchange and Crescent City Cigars still cater to pipe smokers. The Epitome is in Biloxi now, I think, at least a shop with that name operates in the Beachfront mall. Worth the trip to Mississippi, and get some casino action too.

Cajun: I may take you up on that ! We actually are going to New Orleans for a wedding somewhere in October or November... my wife has the date, I just go along for the ride and free booze
But since I haven't been there yet, some tips would be appreciated. I'm going to try to tack on a day or two to just explore the city and its food.

Aaargh, I've been to New Orleans several times, but not back since Katrina. Looks like it's time to plan another trip there and throw a few dollars into the local economy. I'm looking at the Vegas pipe show this fall and maybe do Disneyland with the kids in the spring. Hmm, sometime late next year perhaps, time to start planning!

Last time I was there was March of 09 and I had a blast. Sure some places went out, but the feel of the quarter was the same to me. I love that place, it has a vibe unlike many cities I have been to. Cajunguy, I will definitely look you up next time I plan on going there. I might make a trip there this winter, I miss it.
