That is just awesome and I would love to have one just like it. Those brass accents just get me all fuzzy.

I had you in mind when I posted this
The price was really more reasonable than I expected. If I would have guessed, I'd have put it at twice the price he listed it for.

Definitely more than reasonable in the price for the quality of work and right up my alley. Haha who knows? I may just have to start putting away some savings to commission another steamy oom paul from the man.

To me its worth passing on 8 cheap pipes in exchange for one masterpiece.

I dont know if you would clean that pipe, or just keep it lubed with 40wt motor oil.

Definitely excessive but it wouldn't be very steampunk without them. Also I'm not sure if it was intended but in Victorian rooms a bare wall was considered to be poor form as they were supposed to display the home owners interests and personality. So the addition of decoration to the flat surfaces nods not only to steampunk but to Victorian ideas. Looking at it as a piece of art it's a fantastic representation of what steampunk stands for.

As a smoking tool it does require a specific sort of mind to find it appealing.

With a pipe like this, its going to be love or hate. I'm with Bigvan, and I wouldnt smoke this pipe personally. What I love about it is the creativity, the execution and just the fact that its out there for guys that think its the best thing since sliced bread.
Nate says he will try to log on here later, so if you guys have some questions for him ask away.

I can appreciate the craftsmanship, but the aesthetic does not appeal to me. I'm not really on board with the whole steam punk Ideal either so the whole concept is just not for me.

Hey everyone! Nate here, and thanks for the comments! I appreciate both for and against, as noted, different strokes. This was a commissioned pipe to fit a theme for an upcoming book. So, it is understood if some/many don't like it, it was made to fill a very narrow role. I think everyone noted they appreciated the craftsmanship, even if they didn't like it for themselves; and that I appreciate. This was a very complex form to execute and I questioned my thinking during the pipe making process, but I think the result is quite nice and it's owner will be extremely happy! And he will be smoking it! The balance and comfort are surprising with this one. Built as a chin-rester, it is on the heavy side (3.9oz.) but it's actually not distracting. At least to me, we'll see what the owner has to say! Again, thanks all!!

Thanks! And for the record, it is not self smoking or cleaning! It doesn't require any oil or lubrication either. It does however like to combust a choice tobacco leaf!

I never really understood the steampunk thing but that is an amazing example of craftmanship! Does it have a metal bowl insert or is that just a ring of some sort at the top of the chamber?

EDIT-I see what it is now, went to your site.

Many thanks to Nate for my new pipe. The real owner (me) and the fictitious owner (main character for a movie pitch) will both enjoy the pipe. I'm an illustrator in the entertainment industry and Nate offered to design a steampunk pipe for one of the primary characters. I couldn't be more pleased with it's unique design. Nate makes some great stuff. I hope one of my illustrations for the pitch will do it justice.

I do hope you're open for commissions Nate, because one day I may try to appeal to those talented hands of yours. If you couldn't tell by now I am quite taken by your design sense.

Also about as jealous as I can get of your fortune to have such a work of art Sideache.

I had time to sit down this afternoon and enjoy my new acquisition. The inaugural smoke was excellent. Nice and smooth. It sits on the chin nicely once I found the sweet spot. The rusticated upper bands are perfect for my thumb while holding the pipe in hand. It is bulky, as it should be for steampunk, and yet is remarkably lighter than I would have imagined. The pictures don't do the grain justice. I will give it a couple of days rest and give it another go. On Sunday at my Chestertonians meeting, it will be brought out for all to envy. This is a themed pipe, but no novelty, the craftsmanship on this bad-boy is seriously outstanding!

MANY THANKS NATE! Your work is outstanding.

I can see how that pipe would appeal to the steampunk crowd. I have seen some of their outfits and gadgets and it would easily fit right in.
