She just came through an operation to fuse three vertebra in her neck to cure a bone spur / herniated disk. She is feeling much better, but needs serious rest for a few weeks.
One of the doctors strongly stated that she can not smoke now, not that she smoked before. Apparently nicotine can affect bone healing. A quick google search showed several medical studies about this.

Glad to hear of the success! Make sure you wash your hands real good after smoking. Nicotine can be rubbed off your skin and absorbed through hers! The amount is probably minimal, but why take chances?

I hate to hear that she needed this surgery, but I'm happy it went well and she's home again.
