I had so much fun and was so happy with the pipe rack you guys saw in my earlier thread, I decided to try my hand at making a tamper. I used a nice piece of red oak, and found a small copper tip from a pen that I had to put on the end. I know...pics or it didn't happen.

That is pretty cool and looks shaped right.
I ever made a tamper before, but I would like to with this stem. I broke the stem last week, David Jones is making me a new stem. I think the old stem could be made into a tamper, hoping from suggestions from our resident tamper expert, Ejames. First thoughts are:

- sand fat part smooth, fill hole with epoxy and use a shell casing to tamp?

- heat, straighten the stem. Cut to spoon shape and fill in the hole w/expoxy?

Thanks Ejames, with your reputation, that compliment means alot. It's nowhere near as good as your stuff, but I was pretty happy for a first try, and it made me want to try some more.

Nice looking tamper, especially for a first try!
Al, I hope you follow through on that idea. I think it would look cool.

Good job brother, they are addictive....you can't just make one ;-)
As I take the day for bamboo harvesting...all I see are tampers

and pipe shanks as far as the eye can see ;-)
