I'm not sure about the aesthetics, although the briar looks top notch and I really like the stain (or is it natural?).

On the other hand, I would really like to smoke it!

Bungee: It is natural,I just used transparent paint.
Cossackjack: you are right, I also think it's good for flakes.

I wish I knew. I haven't made a reverse calabash yet because of this very same reason. I've read that if you don't line the mortise on these that the moisture will make the tenon loosen over several smokes. So to ensure a constant fit a lining is best. Maybe search over at pipemakersforum. Sorry I can't be of more help.
