I hate to be the dissenting voice, and all respect to the opinion of anyone who enjoys 'Mrs Brown', but I can't stand the thing - and I've yet to meet another Irish person who could. For a really good Irish sitcom look no further than the inimitable 'Father Ted'.

Ms Brown is some good rowdy physical comedy, slapstick but funny. My favorite Irish humorist of recent

times, though all of his writing had serious intent, was the late Frank McCort, who migrated to the U.S. as

a young man and taught in schools in New York City for most of his career, but grew up desperately poor

in Limerick, Ireland. He scoffed at people who had made it in other careers and wanted to have a second

career teaching to "give something back." He'd roll his eyes and give it a comic pause, and say,

"Boy, do I have a class for you."
