I want to take a moment, this "Decoration Day", as my dad always called it. to give a small "thank you" to those men and women who gave all in the service of their country. That's who this day is about, friends; not the veterans, nor the active service folks. This day is about The Fallen - those who never made it to be veterans. And,as always, I say a special thank you to John Underwood, my 5 x G'Grandfather, who died a British POW during our Revolution.

While growing up we called it Decoration Day as well.
Since this thread has an historical slant to it Confederate Memorial Day will be observed on June 6th in the southern states that still observe.

Hunter,
The numbers are staggering; 620,000 men during the Civil War. Nearly as many of those died while in captivity as died in the Vietnam war. The battlefields at Gettysburg (51,000 casualties), Antietam (22,717), Shiloh (23,700) & Murfreesboro (23,000) for example, have to be hallowed ground. Casualties at Antietam totaled 22,000, all in one day.
Just staggering! It has been estimated that casualties were roughly 2% of the population at that time.

My son doesn't want to go but he is, my hope that he someday realizes the ultimate sacrifices made so he can sit on his butt eating BBQ and playing video games the rest of the day.
Just tell him that the south went to war over good BBQ & good Kentucky Bourbon.

The Lower Forty of Hill Country
Eternal Father, Strong to Save (Also known as the Navy Hymn) - Dedicated this day to all fallen American patriots:
Eternal Father, strong to save,

Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,

Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep

Its own appointed limits keep;

Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,

For those in peril on the sea!
O Christ! Whose voice the waters heard

And hushed their raging at Thy word,

Who walked'st on the foaming deep,

And calm amidst its rage didst sleep;

Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,

For those in peril on the sea!
Most Holy Spirit! Who didst brood

Upon the chaos dark and rude,

And bid its angry tumult cease,

And give, for wild confusion, peace;

Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,

For those in peril on the sea!
O Trinity of love and power!

Our brethren shield in danger's hour;

From rock and tempest, fire and foe,

Protect them wheresoe'er they go;

Thus evermore shall rise to Thee

Glad hymns of praise from land and sea.
Amen

@ johnnyreb, I had three uncles, all in the Confederate Army, that fought at Murfreesboro. One was killed.
Were they in the cavalry under Nathan Bedford Forrest?
