I recently acquired a couple of used meerschaum pipes. I was wondering how to go about cleaning them. I have read you shouldn't used any chemicals on meerschaums. So no salt and alcohol? What about the retort method? Or should I just clean the stem and smoke the ghosts out? Thanks for the help.

Hi there. So this was in the Pipe Maintenance section.
This is apparently a how to guide. Roth initially posted it, but it was written by someone else.

I just clean the stem, use a tiny dab of alcohol on pipe cleaners and q-tips to clean the shank and mortise (this can take a few days if you're paranoid and only use 2-3 cleaners/q-tips at a time a few times a day) and then smoke it.
