Via Tad Gage on Facebook. McClellands supply of Syrian is now gone.
Good luck stocking up while you can. I will miss 3 Oaks Syrian and Samovar!

I'm well stocked. But sad news indeed.

    Thanks for the update.

I just grabbed 10x tins of 3 Oaks Syrian to round out my cellar. Last week I placed a similar order for Syrian Star.

Wow. Despite what actually ends up happening with the FDA, this was not really a variable in terms of certain blends disappearing in the near future.

Glad I stocked up on Syrian blending stock a few years back.

Meanwhile the Syrian people have lost a lot more than a contribution to the tobacco industry... not trying to stir anything up, just a bigger picture reminder (for me) to be grateful I live in relative peace.

Syrian Latakia does not exist because their government banned the cultivation of the woods used to cure the particular Oriental leaf. It has nothing to do with the recent unrest.
I'm surprised McClelland's supply lasted as long as it did. They sure have put it to good use.

3 Oaks Syrian was my extreme favorite for a while... I think I have a tin or 3 maybe. And Samovar, one open and one "back". Lovely bakkies each. And god save the Syrian refugees in deference to mortonbriar's perspective which I also share. I saw a news thing thing this morning on courageous and heroic Greek fishermen from the main town on the Greek Island of Lesbos who gave up their incomes and time to rescue thousands of Syrian refugees hopelessly adrift on the Aegean... and then I guess this week suffered a freak winter storm that severely damaged their boats. The thought of Cyprian latakia, Macedonian bakkies and briar, and several extremely talented Greek pipe makers made me feel the world a smaller place of the need for human unity. Sorry to ramble... I can't get this Greek fishing boat with stuffed 20 some Syrian children just pulled from a dangerous Mediterranean image out of my head.

What Syrian refugees have to do with Syrian tobacco that hasn't been produced in a decade is beyond me at this point.

Anyway, don't shy away from cellaring latakia. If stored properly, they last a good long number of decades. The problem is when they aren't stored correctly.

I've opened many 10+ and 20+ year old tins with latakia and have only ever run into 1 that has gone flat. And I attribute it to the previous owner not controlling the storage temperatures.

I would more or less shrug off the disappearance of Syrian Latakia were it not for the fact that I like the blends in which McClelland uses the leaf. Alas, I suspect the new FDA rules prohibit substituting Cyprian Latakia, or at least the label changes such a substitution would require.

Hey, I'm as nostalgic as anyone, but right now, with so many amazing blends around, perhaps for a limited time only, I'm not spending any time on mourning. As glacial as my smoking is. Blends get discontinued by the time I open the tins.

I've go at a little held back from one blend or another, I'm not crying, but I'm sad for those who love the stuff. If my palette had been blessed with blends that really showcased Syrian, then Id know what I'm missing.

There is still Cyprus, for the time being. That said, Syrian being gone for now or forever also opens the door to maybe something else, something new, as good or possibly better to fill its place. You never know.

If anybody is curious, McConell ran out as well.

As far as alternatives go, I contacted Smoker's Haven and they told me that in their Syrian blends they use alternative that they source from some secret source they would not mention, which is not at all Cyprian.

For me personally, I would have taken the loss of Cyprus Latakia much better, Syrian was the stuff.

This Philosophy drove my stocking. I have enough for about 15 years of recreational smoking across the blends that still use Syrian.

Anyway, don't shy away from cellaring latakia. If stored properly, they last a good long number of decades. The problem is when they aren't stored correctly.

THIS makes me sad and wish I'd known. I would have doubled my stocks. I'm unable to buy like I once did.

I think this may leave MacBaren as the sole holder of Syrian, right?

I've got one more tin of 3 Oaks Syrian from 2009 and though I loved it when I first started smoking, I feel that their stock of Syrian Latakia is losing it's potency and fading, as is all of the Syrian leaf, not just McClelland. Anyway, one tin is enough for me.

kanse, there's no Syrian in Legends, so no immediate worries there. Not sure what you heard about the Smokers Haven blends, but the OBB that came out last year didn't seem to me like it was trying to act like it had any Syrian in it. I know that OBB used to have it in there. The Latakia in my tin of OBB smelled and tasted like what you would find in Margate or the new Sobranie. (AFAIK these all use the same source for tobaccos.)

whitesands77, sorry I got you hooked on that Syrian Star man. That was the worst possible timing ever.

    Sad News!
I enjoyed 3 Oaks Syrian, and am happy I have a few tins left. The one I will miss the most (and only have 2 tins!!!) is Orient 996. That was probably my favorite "Mellow yet flavorful," smoke when I was in the mood for subtle flavors. I greatly enjoyed that one as my morning smoke during the summer.

P&C is down to "Tudor Castle Arcade", "Syrian Full Balkan", "Yendije Highlander", & "Rose of Latakia".

SP has Ringlow Reserve", and "Syrian Full Balkan".

They both have FMOTP but I have not smoked it and am not 100% sure it still has Syrian in it. If someone wants to confirm that it does, that would be great.

It's still out there elsewhere on-line, but not a lot, and generally more expensive.

I wonder if anything else is still en-route to the distributors, and what it might be.

I ordered 5 tins of Syrian Star, that's the only recent damage that I did.

SmokingPipes website just re-stocked with everything McClellands Syrian, get it while you can! They do have a lot, and perhaps they will do a sale for IPSD later this month, but I just went ahead and bought 10 cans of Syrian Star to fill out my stock to be done with it.

Pretty sure 996 is Syrian-only in the Latakia department, and not a whole lot of it. The label on the tin states Syrian and makes no mention of Cyprian. Oddly enough, there is more than one retail site that lists it as having Cyprian in it, while making no mention of the Syrian content. In any case, I sense the Latakia more in the room note as compared to the flavor. It's a fine smoke, but VA forwards, so I would go with Syrian Star or 3 Oaks Syrian if you want a blast of Syrian flavor.

Did I just fall for another sky-is-falling news announcement?

Scooped up some Syrian-rich blends, even though I probably have a dozen pounds cellared, which is almost a lifetime supply for me...and now SP has everything in stock again.

Yeah, I was really just joking. Because these (probably quite legitimate) end-of-the-line announcements have been coming out with such regularity. And spiking my TAD.

Syrian, the FDA grandfather/deeming thing, some of my favorite small blenders announcing they are closing up shop, Dunhill, etc....

Syrian Star out of stock at SP.com already. They had about 90 left this morning when I bought some. Samovar probably next with 16 tins to go. 494 tins of 3OS left. 419 Wilderness. 130 Highlander. 64 Ringlow Reserve. 61 Celebrated Sovereign. There are a few more McC blends with Syrian in them, but they are all fairly low-rated so not going to bother looking them up. P&C has some stuff in too, but can't see the inventory, and they didn't get in (or put up) everything that SP got in today. How many more shipments will there be? One? None? Twelve? Even if it is BS, it sure is fun to watch the panic!

Simple rx2man, just add 1000 to your cart at SP. Unless they have more than that, it will basically say "we only have XXX left in stock...", and Roberts your fathers brother. This does not work at P&C.

Also meant to include Orient 996 in my list up there, which is currently at 248. Samovar is now gone from current inventory.

Just curious as to what you guys are seeing in terms of tin dates on what you are getting. I just got a little Syrian Star in, which contains one can from the Monday re-stock at SP, and the remains of the last time they went out of stock about a week and a half ago. All cans are from '16. I'm having fun trying to guess if there will be another shipment of anything coming in, and what it might be. I suspect that there may be some more of certain things after this most recent re-stock, but it would be interesting to see what you guys are seeing date-wise on your blends if you ordered from SP on or after Monday. (I only got some Syrian Star this go-around, so can't do much guess-work with that.)

I was never all that drawn to Syrian Latakia. Nonetheless, I have 2 tins of the 3 Oaks Syrian and 1 of Wilderness in the cellar. Should hold me over. I do, and have for a while, liked the sound of the Orient 996 blend. I would like to add 1 or 2 tins to the cellar, but just cannot justify any more tobacco purchases.

Interesting, Zito. Was that from SPs Monday re-stock?

northernneil, you should be good on the 996 if you get it within a couple of weeks. I'm guessing that they might sell out of their Highlander next, but I think everything now at SP will be around for at least the next 10 to 14 days, even if they don't get anything more in.

I'm thinking that at least a few blends should still be coming out of McClellands though, if the stuff that we are getting now from SP is still stamped '16. I have no idea if McC tins them and send them right out, or if they need to sit for a while, so tough for me to guess.

Looking at SP, someone bought a good percentage of the Sovereign, as it's down from ~45 to 27 tins, Tudor Castle Arcade 46. Highlander 72. Wilderness, 3 Oaks, and 996 all have between 200 & 400 in stock. I'm not following FMATP, Full or Super Balkan, or Rose of Latakia, and I started watching Arcade instead of the Ringlow.

3 Oaks Syrian has been selling at the rate of about 40 per day. So at that rate it will be gone roughly this time next Friday!

Just got a few of those 3 Oaks Syrians today... I wish McClelland's would run out of catsup sooner than later.

P&C still shows 3OS in stock, although I know that their system has been having issues, so who knows if that is accurate. SP added some more Highlander and Sovereign to their existing online inventory.

With all of the conjecture flying around about Syrian Latakia elsewhere on the forums, I'm bumping the "real" 'Syrian all gone!' thread. =)

Here's what's left McClelland-wise right now over at SP.

    82 Sovereign
    14 Arcade
    72 Orient 996
    157 Wilderness
    64 Highlander
    33 Rose of Latakia
    53 Syrian Super Balkan

I didn't look up the Forg Morton ATP.

3 Oaks Syrian very recently went into back-order at P&C...perhaps that means that another shipment is expected.

I've seen them get in a couple of the blends as well, and SPs Highlander inventory increase a couple of times now.

Personally still hoping for one last hurrah of Syrian Star to show up, but we will see.
