I want to make a set up using magnets to position a pipe so that I can photograph some of them. Can anyone with experience in this suggest what type of magnets to get for my set up and where to purchase them?

I've never used them for a pipe stand but I bought a ton of them for my fridge, and I have to say that the "neodymium rare earth magnets" or whatever they are, are strong as hell and super thin. For the price, size and quantity it would be worth a shot trying. If you just type in magnet on ebay there's a gabillion listings for them. They do however break pretty easy. I've dropped a couple of them trying to pry them off of the fridge and they are prone to breaking when they hit the floor.

I'm looking for spherical magnets to slip into the chamber, and probably a ring shape for a base that I'll affix to a base. I've noticed that there are different strengths and grades, so anyone who has made such a set up could help steer me to the best choices.

Folks with young kids, grandkids, or pets who eat inappropriate non-food items, keep the magnets away from them. Turns out when swallowed small magnets can adhere to each other and cause necrosis (tissue death) in the intestines. What are the chances of that? But with three-year-old kids or puppies with no food discrimination, you have to remember. Just put 'em away and out of reach, problem solved. (This came to light with a toy that had magnets you string together to make bracelets and necklaces.)

Don't leave your wallet anywhere too accessible while you're in there.
As far as "fun per dollar" goes, I think these take the cake.

Sablebrush, I've made some magnetic pipe racks and stands. At the end of this post I'll post links to the threads.
My personal experience is that to attain any serious level of stability you have to use one 20 pound magnet beneath the pipe and one 6 to 10 pound magnet inside the pipe. These are neodymium magnets, not regular magnets. Regular ferrite magnets would be very big in these ratings.
You can get them on ebay or Amazon. Just search for neodymium magnets and look for the right rating and size.
PM me if you need any additional details. If I can, I will gladly help you design you rack/stand.
Cheers and good luck with your project,
J

What a timely thread! I have been wanting to make a similar system for photographing pipes. Makers like Mark Tinsky and Scottie Piersel use magnets to position their pipes for great photos.
I also want to make some stands that can accommodate my larger and/or oddly shaped pipes. Speaking of magnetic stands, Bungee's are quite good looking.
