How long has lucite (acrylic) been used for stem material? It is my understanding Italian pipe makers have been using lucite the longest. Does anyone know since when?

One good thing about having a lot of pipes, your wife doesn't notice when you get a new one.

That's a good question. I vaguely recall reading an article on stems that gave the impression that lucite stems have been around since the '60s. Maybe someone here knows the actual answer...

I was going to guess around 50-60 years. I will be interested to see if anyone comes up with the exact date.

Lucite was discovered in 1928, and marketed in 1933.. My Preben Holm era Ben Wade from the 70's has a lucite stem, would be interested in an exact date as well...

I believe it was Costello that brought the lucite bit into the picture. They started making pipes in 1947 but I don't know if they were using lucite from the beginning.
