Hi !
I am new to pipe smokeing. I actually enjoy pipe tobacco by rolling pipe tobacco in a cigarette (hand rolled or using a tube).
But I now want to have a pipe.
I am looking for the cheapest smooth black bent briar pipe that will stand on a table without a holder ( I am a practical guy). I looked for a smooth black poker or cherrywood model but I have founded nothing under 100$.
I you know any model other that poker and cherrywood that could stand by themselves on a table, I would be glad to hear from it.
I am more looking for a 40-60$ pipe max. I think that should be enough to buy a quality pipe.
I looked hard on the internet but I couldn't find a pipe that satisfy those requirement.
I am open to filtered or non filtered pipe and I would like to hear your point of view on that.
Thanks

I forgot to mention that I will not considered estate pipes for multiple reasons. I wouldn't be able to distinguished a defective pipe from a good one (brand name doesn't garantee no defect on a used model). I wouldn't be able to identify a burned pipe. I wouldn't want to use a tip that someone else putted in his mouth.

How about this?

There is some poker style and I don't know this pipe but looks o.k. to me.

Try this: http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/rossi/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=162845

It's the closest I could find from smokingpipes.com. I'm not usually a fan of pokers, so I don't take much note of who makes them. Rossi are owned by Savinelli, and seem to have some pretty decent pipes. I have my eye on a couple of their billiards...
It's also worth noting - both of my straight billiards stand up on their own pretty well (barring any strong winds), so you may not be limited just to Poker styled pipes. At any rate - I'd always say go for a pipe you like the look of over an uglier yet more practical pipe.

Welcome.
Try this thread: http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/nice-affordable-poker-pipes
Also, a bias against estate pipes tends to not be a very good thing in this hobby if you ever want to expand your collection/rotation regardless of your budget.

Welcome to the forum!

I wouldn't want to use a tip that someone else putted in his mouth.

You should re-think your view on used pipes, as they can be a great $$ savings. Also, do you not go to restaurants, where all the silverware and drinking glasses have been putted in someone else's mouth?

I was about to point out the very same thing. I can only assume that you find it distasteful to frequent restaurants and using their silverware, etc.?

A bit more than your stated max, but just outside the poker family as well.

And it's okay to not want estate pipes. Some are alot of work to make usable. Smoke what you like, and like what you smoke.

Not being able to discern a defective pipe from a good smoker doesn't necessarily help an argument for buying a new pipe over an estate either. There are loads of defective pipes out there that are brand spankin' new and just waiting to be purchased. It's the same situation in the estate market but pipes are cheaper. Pipes are just like any other product in that sense. Sometimes an estate pipe that's been well taken care of, and that has some age on it, can end up being the best smoking pipe in a rotation. Might as well save some money and bust a phobia in the process.

Cup O Joes sometimes has a Parker by Dunhill poker/cherrywood for about $60 which is a good

smoking pipe.

Any one of these Tuxedo Dress cob pipes from Walker Briar Works will do the job and smoke as good as any $100 briar I've tried. And they come with "Forever Stems".

Another great sitter that can be had in the $78 range at Iwan Ries is the Peterson bent brandy B11.

Hi Strugul, and welcome. I hope you find what you're looking for. And by the way, please keep in mind that most estate pipe dealers will sanitize the scams thoroughly, so you need to worry about picking up an infection. Incidentally, giving the stem a good swabbing with alcohol both inside and out will kill germs rather effectively. Keep in mind that a quick swab on your arm with alcohol is enough to satisfy a doctor when he sticks a needle in your vein. Of course, if the aesthetics concern you then that's another matter.

I think this is exactly what you're looking for. Not bad for $35

These Savanelli Private Label pipes used to be sitters. http://www.pipesandcigars.com/pipes/89921/savinelli-private-label-2014/ I bought three of the 2008 models. You might call pipesandcigars and ask them if the new models are sitters. If they are, they smoke very well. They are rusticated, not smooth, but to get a Sav at that price... well, I don't think you can do better in today's market.
