Alright, i am a beginner pipe smoker. I bought my first pipe a few weeks ago at a local tobaccanist. It has no names on it so im not sure if what brand it is but it is a briar. It smokes fine. I wanna take my pipe smoking up a notch and purchase something a little bit pricier. Im looking for a cherrywood style pipe (like a bent poker), or maybe just a poker. any recommendations? One question though is, what makes a pipe better than another? What makes one worth 200 vs 50?

Rossi is one of Savinelli's subsidiaries, how about this?

I've noticed that volume of briar in a pipe, craftsmanship, and maker's name are the chief influences on pipe prices.

That one is nice. But i want something that pops. Something sort of different. I'm not sure.. just not something too plain. Although i know 70 is pretty low for the very artistic pieces.

Quite a few pipes available in the $ 70 dollar range. Try searching Smokingpipes.com and 4noggins. $70 will get you a solid, reliable and good looking pipe but I wouldn't expect anything out of the ordinary in that price range. You may find an estate pipe in that price range with a little more "pop"?

I wish Peterson made a Poker. They've got one in the Mark Twain Collection, packaged with another pipe, but that's it, as far as I could find.

Look at Italian factory pipes such as LaRocca, Rossi, Lorenzo, Cussano, Molino and perhaps some Danish machine mades like the Viking line, they make a filtered and non-filtered line. All of these should fall into your price point and I'm sure there's more than one that'll grab your attention.

sojuice, I could shop for you, but this is your opportunity to comb the online retailers, like our sponsors, and learn about brands of pipes, shapes, prices, and much more. Forums sponsors are on the left hand margin of the Forums home page so you don't even have to leave Forums to view them. Just click on pipes, and go to work. You say you are looking for something that pops, and what pops for you can only be knowable to you. I can assure you, as the Forums resident moderate-to-low price pipe expert, there are plenty of the pipes you describe being offered, well within your price. But you have to work at it to get both the shape and price you want and a pipe that pops for you. Good luck! I'm not being cantankerous -- I'm sending you on a great adventure, and it should be more than just buying this particular pipe. Incidentally, I'd recommend sticking with new pipes for your first few briars. There are many more variables with used (estate) pipes, and I'd get a base line feel for pipe buying starting out with new ones, but many on Forums would disagree.

+1 MSO. You might have to look at a hundred or more before that pipe pops out for you. Take your time. Buy pipes you love, not those you just like.
Having said that, this $49.00 Brushed Black Stanwell popped out for me. I slept on it, looked at it again the next day, and then pulled the trigger. It should arrive tomorrow. Everytime I order a new pipe, waiting for it is like waiting for a little Christmans. BTW, Stanwells smoke great. It also comes in brushed brown.
Good luck.

I was going to suggest Stanwell as well. That is a great looking pipe Mr. PAX. I agree, they smoke great and have a wide price point range. Hard to beat that pipe for around $50

Thanks Jack. BTW,SoJuice, P&C tells me that pokers are hot (pardon the pun) and sell out quick. So, if you see one that clicks with you, don't wait TOO long.
