Like many pipe smokers my primary lighter is a Zippo with a pipe insert. I always carry an inexpensive but dependable BIC backup though just in case the fluid runs short. Sort of like a cop on patrol who carries his duty weapon but also his back-up gun just in case. I have found though, that there is a definite purpose for the back up light and I do use it as my primary lighter on specific occasions so I thought I'd share my experience. A Zippo does not go out if dropped. A BIC does not stay lit if it is dropped, hence the purpose of each. While driving I never use the Zippo. I also never use the Zippo for a relight if reclining in my La-Z-Boy lounger. On more than one instance I've accidently fumbled with the Zippo and I've learned to use caution with it although it is a great piece of equipment and it is my primary source of heat. Have any of you men ever dropped your lit Zippo?

I purchased a Xikar pipe lighter about 6 months back and couldn't be happier with its performance. I use disposable lighters or matches as well.

I have a Xikar cigar lighter and a couple cutters and I can highly recommend their products based on my experience using them.

I use a Zippo pipe lighter as my only source of heat. I don't drive and haven't dropped the zippo (yet).

I personally use the BIC lighters, they have a soft flame and clean taste to me, and I buy them by the gross and am never without a lighter, they are also very convenient and efficient as a pipe lighter, in my opinion.

I own a couple of Zippo's, this one is my favorite. I had Zippo put in a cigar insert, but also recently bought a Vector butane insert. The Vector does a better job lighting the tobacco, but blows out easily. Most of my smoking is outside, so the fluid insert gets a lot of use. Good reminder on dropping lit Zippo! Martin, thanks for the heads-up. That really applies to me! I use a Zippo with a gas insert,
and it doesn't go out until the case is shut. I've noticed that as I age, both arthritis and
drying skin have me fumbling around more often because of the shiny smooth lighter case. At
home it's not a problem, but I'm definitely gonna get a BIC for the car. Thanks.

I have owned Zippo's for all my adult life, so I am not bashing them in general. I have my Grandfather's and my Uncle's he carried in vietnam, but the Zippo pipe lighter sucks IMO. I can't light the bottom of a bowl with it. The 14 dollar IMCOs that run on butane have a replaceable flint, an angled flame that you can make as long or short as you want. These work best for me.

i like to use matches but usually if there is some wind i can't light my pipe so i use this one instead... David Ross household lighter - very cheap, very reliable, refilling is possible - very good especially to light pipes that have a very tall chambers...

Nice one, Mukihr. I use an orange Bic lighter, backed up by a red Bic lighter, backed up by a barbeque lighter, backed up by a blowtorch. I rarely have problems because the pipes are afraid of the blowtorch and they know I'm not afraid to use it.

I keep a small 32 count box of wooden matches (primary), two paper matchbooks, my zippo with a pipe insert, a zippo without the pipe insert, and at least one bic on hand at all times. Of course here at home I have umm. . .. About 200 of those boxes of matches, a case of the matchbooks (no idea how many are in there .. . a lot) 30 or 40 black bics, those two zippos and my third one I rotate with the non-pipe zippo.

My preference is absolutely to use matches, but it gets far too windy for that to be effective quite often around here.

For the most part I just use whatever is handy really >.>

    Sincerely,

    Yoru

I keep a couple of 10 packs of the cheap Wally World butanes. (which I modify)
And, I keep several 10 packs of wooden matches.
I prefer the matches, but I (pardon the pun) burn through one of those lighters every couple of days.

zippo and a bic here, i use the bic for the "false light" to get everything packed down right, then use the zippo till probably 1/2 to 2/3 of the bowl is gone, then i go back to the bic because i can't draw the zippo flame down that far (really deep bowl, almost to my second knuckle)

but i have noticed i will do some crazy puffs to get a light with the zippo when i'm driving because no A/C means no BIC lol

I picked up a Zippo with the pipe insert yesterday. Just couldn't keep the matches lit outdoors except in a dead calm. Had a POS cheap pipe lighter that couldn't reliably light gunpowder, let alone tobacco.

My main is a zippo that was part of the Peterson Pipe / Zippo gift pkg. I have a Vector pipe lighter (which I am not thrilled with), then a bic, then if absolutely needed, stick matches.

Lets see here... My main lighter is a cheap one that I got from smokingpipes.com (it is like a refillable bic pipe lighter) and I use that because I have no fear of breaking it. After that it is my Zippo, then my two Old Boy knockoffs and then matches!

My main lighter is a Bic because I usually only smoke while driving. (The car is the last refuge of a smoker, isn't it?) It doesn't blow out as easily with the sunroof open. I also have a 60+ year old Nimrod I use when I smoke on the deck. It doesn't like the wind very much.

Colibri, then restaurant box matches whenever I can snag them, then I rub the tobacco really fast between my fingers. The last method mostly makes a mess.
