how does one pronounce this correctly (i'm still new)
Lat-A-Key-uh
Lat-A-kye-uh
Lat-uh-kye-uh
...or does it even matter... I'm going with that for now.

On the NPR radio news the other day, they did a story on the ancient Syrian port city of Latakia. The Syrians interviewed as, well as the commentators, all pronounced it La-ta-KIA with the emphasis in the last syllable. Not the second syllable like many pipe smokers do here.

I would transliterate it to
La ta kiiii ah
It is an arabic word. A nisbah adjective - describes an association. The name of a city in Sham - Syria.

When I first saw the word in print, I pronounced it (in my head) as la-tack-ee-uh. When I saw it being said in youtube videos, everyone was saying lot-uh-kia (last syllable pronounced like the car name).
