It's been 13 years since Humphrey and I found one another.

I watched him grow from a fuzzy little ball into a 110 pound Brindle Moose.

We've done too much together to even try to list and he saw me through some tough times.

Now, it's my turn to be strong and help him down his next path.

We have a vet coming tomorrow morning to facilitate his passing here at home.

One last trip to our favorite Creek and a dinner of Steak & Potatoes with a side of Bacon.

So long Bubbalou ... you will be greatly missed.

Aw, hell... I'm sorry, my friend. I've been there. When ol' Hoppy got too stove up; when he was looking at me with his brown eyes, pleading. When he's just asking for the pain to stop... Well, I figured I owed him that much, in the end. Still, it tore my heart out and God help me, but this crusty ol' sergeant cried like a baby. My best to you and your best friend.

Cob, my best buddy, Gumbo, passed on 3 years ago. He and I were together for 13 years also. It is heart breaking to say the least and there isn't a day that I don't miss him. I'm sorry for your pain and your loss. Tell Humphrey to look up Ole Gumbo when he gets to where his journey takes him. I'm smoking a bowl of Gumbo's favorite blend...1Q..and told him to be on look out for Humphrey. All my best to you and Humphrey.

Good on you for making his last day a wonderful one. It's very hard to do but too many people do not do what you are doing for your best friend. Cherish the memories! I will smoke a bowl in his honor this evening.

Cob,
So sorry to learn this but you have made the right decision for all the right reasons. It was time to think of your best friend and not be selfish trying for one more day together. I went thru a similar situation a few years ago after almost 15 yrs together. His memory can still bring a tear to my eyes. Just know he will be better off. All the best to you both tomorrow!

Too impossibly sad, Cob. I grieve for you. I believe when we finally make it to the outskirts of heaven, our old dogs will be waiting there to welcome us.

So sorry to hear this; I too have been there. I know you'll be strong for Humphrey, and I am keeping you both in my thoughts and prayers.

Always a tough day! In time, the good memories will eclipse the sadness of his passing.
I'm in the process of getting a dog for my family. I grew up with dogs and cats around and the kids have been wanting one for a while. Knowing how much they can add to life, I felt we shouldn't wait much longer to welcome one into the home.

So sorry that this is happening for you. I've had to do it four times over my life span and never gets easier. Blessings and prayers go out to you and Humphrey.

cobguy:
May God bless you both.
The Power of the Dog

By Rudyard Kipling (an ardent dog-lover)
"There is sorrow enough in the natural way

From men and women to fill our day;

And when we are certain of sorrow in store,

Why do we always arrange for more?

Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware

Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.
"Buy a pup and your money will buy

Love unflinching that cannot lie--

Perfect passion and worship fed

By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.

Nevertheless it is hardly fair

To risk your heart for a dog to tear.
"When the fourteen years which Nature permits

Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,

And the vet's unspoken prescription runs

To lethal chambers or loaded guns,

Then you will find--it's your own affair--

But...you've given your heart for a dog to tear.
"When the body that lived at your single will,

With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!);

When the spirit that answered your every mood

Is gone--wherever it goes--for good,

You will discover how much you care,

And will give your heart for the dog to tear.
"We've sorrow enough in the natural way,

When it comes to burying Christian clay.

Our loves are not given, but only lent,

At compound interest of cent per cent.

Though it is not always the case, I believe,

That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve;
"For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,

A short-time loan is as bad as a long--

So why in Heaven (before we are there)

Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?"

Right in the feels. Sad to hear of your impending loss. There are no condolences more effective than our memories and it sounds like you two have had a bunch. I'm sure both of your lives were greatly improved by each other's company and there is no way he would rather pass than there with you. My thoughts are with you both, sorry Cob.
