    I'm looking for your opinion...

Lawrence, I haven't been home to try the sample you sent... Thanks in advance...

I'm also looking for more information on "Lane RLP-6"...

    I hope you like it.
Like I've said before; it's just a good utilitarian smoke.
    You're welcome "in advance".

I've been told by some pipe smokers that the 1-Q blend is the same as Capt'n Black Royal that you can buy at the drug store. Is this true? I kind of like the Capt'n Black Royal, but it sprayed down with all kinds of preservatives.

1Q is an upscale version of the Captain in my opinion, Not at all bad. As for RLP6 I order it in five pound batches. That tell ya anything? LOL

    Hey Jayh,
I don't think its that close CB Royal.
CB Royal is stronger, and sweeter, kind of like a blend I buy at the local B&M called Chart Topper. I just looked it up on The Briary bulk tobacco page and discovered, that RPL6 is Chart Topper.
No disrespect to Uncle Arthur but, I still prefer 1Q.

Awesome, so are we saying that RLP6 is similar to CB royal? If so I'll order a few ounces. Though I've always been concerned about a bulk purchase because i'm not an everyday smoker. Is four ounces worth buying when buying bulk to smoke everyother day or so?

Alright boys while you’re at it is there a bulk blend out there similar to Captain Black white?

    "United States"

JC, I'm not sure about that. I haven't really purchased any bulk that is similar to CBW.

Jayh, If you have a good jar that can be used for tobacco, one that seals well. e.g. a quart size mason jar with ring and lid, that will work just fine, or something similar.
If you have a Dollar General near you check the kitchen wares area. I found some storage jars there last week for 2 & 3 dollars.
Keep it comfortable, not too cool and not too warm, and not too dry. You should have no problem storing 4 ounces for a good while.

The Lane bulks are very affordable ($8 for 4 oz) about the same as a 1.5 oz pouch of Capt. Black around here. Grab a couple of jars and a couple of bags and sit back for a month or two of pleasure

I buy nothing but bulk except when I have a yen for Carter Hall and then its the 14 ounce tub if I can find it.

Welcome Dave... and like Pstlpkr said, mason type jars are probably the best for storage and beside the temperature you should also keep your stash out of long periods of direct sunlight.

Thanks Pstlpkr... I didn't think there was a bulk equivalent.

    NOW... the real question...

How close is 1Q to Cpt. Black White...

I can get 16oz of 1Q for $27.00... CBW is $33.00 for 12oz... I would gladly pay less... But I must like it first...

    Lawrence,

Thank you very much for the sample of the 1Q... This is A++... Very mild, but lots of flavor...

I've had this blend in the past, but it must have been labeled as a "B&M" brand... I smoked two bowls back to back... No goop, pleasing and burned great... My daughter even said the "room note" was great!

I'll take a pound PLEASE & THANK YOU!

Guys... I read on tobaccoreview.com recently that some people were saying that Lane's BCA was similar to Captain Black White... Has anyone tried it?

One reviewer recommended blending 1Q 50/50 with BCA, which is something I may try.

I got some 1Q. It's great, nice sweetness, nothing over the top though. I taste no chemicals and it does not goop up a pipe. I will definately buy more.

Okay Guys … here is a blend idea I picked up from a reviewer of 1Q on tobaccoreviews.com. Mix Lane’s 1Q with their BCA (2/3 1Q two 1/3 BCA), it’s not CB white but it’s getting close and I think it burns cleaner.

If you decide to give it a try let me know what you think.

JC, I will say that it burned all the way to the bottom the bowl tonight... Not hot and it stayed lit even when tamping... Yes it is close, but it's missing something to be CBW...

    This is an interesting thread.

I haven't tried 1Q. I had the chance during my travels recently, but didn't do it. Now I wish I did. (I was already smoking something else I was enjoying at the time.)

I interviewed 3 retailers in North Carolina recently, and 2 out of 3 of them, when asked how they start out a brand new pipe smoker, said with Lane 1Q.

It makes sense to me that it is in the realm of CB, since I think that is a good starter tobacco for a newbie, and they are both made by Lane.

I have been smoking 1Q since the beginning... some... mumble years.
It is my favorite utilitarian tobacco.
I love many different tobaccos but, when I am concentrating on something and require a pipe, it's 1Q.
It packs, and burns beautifully, doesn't require any great deal of attention to keep it lit, and the ladies love the "smell" (to us that's room note).

Kevin, you need to get you a pound. You'll find yourself filling your pouch and keeping it handy. Next thing you know you'll be grabbing that pouch whenever you head out the door, or heading for the BBQ. As for the CBW being similar... maybe. But, give me 1Q any time.

Anyone tried the new Stokkebye Golden Danske? P&C has it and says it's like 1Q. Right around 3 bucks a pound cheaper than Lane and I would think at the very least equal quality. based on other PS blends I'd think it would perhaps be even better.

I won't see any communication directed to me here. I'm no longer active at this forum.

Kevin! You can't continue to run this site until you try 1Q! It's like running an automobile site and not having a drivers license! Its the tobacco that launched a million pipes and pipesmokers!

I just found this thread and I hadn't smoked 1Q in probably 10 years. I've been a touring England, the Lake District and the Jersey Island pretty heavily pipe wise and shyed away from bulk blends. Lately I've had a hankering (oh sweet moses, I've gone country - I've never said 'hankering' before in my life) for 1Q and picked some up today while I was downtown. Man, I've been away from it for too long! I had 2 bowls tonight and revelled in how smooth it is and how much smoke volume it billows. Pretty tasty too with no tongue bite. When I worked at the smoke shop, I remember the Lane rep telling me that 1Q out sold all their other bulk tobaccos combined and with the amount we sold, I believe it.

Anyone tried the new Stokkebye Golden Danske? P&C has it and says it's like 1Q. Right around 3 bucks a pound cheaper than Lane and I would think at the very least equal quality. based on other PS blends I'd think it would perhaps be even better.

No no no no! Just put down the golden dansk and back away from the tobacco!!! Similar to 1Q in principle, it lacks most of 1Q'a good qualities though it shares a smooth smoke and nice room note. Golden Dansk is single handedly the wettest tobacco I've ever smoked. It also burns very very hot.

I also suggest MV1000, a golden Virginia shag. With the typical lane flavor(vanilla-ish). Burn clean, smokes down to a fine ash. I also like BLWB, which is a Burley blend with the same flavor. It has a little more kick. I like that.

After some reading research and smoking 1Q and RLP 6, IMHO the following results
    1Q = Captain Black Royal
RLP 6 = Captain Black White
MY 1999 = Captain Black Gold

This is kinda duplicate post from another thread but I'll tell you my 1Q story. Back 33 years ago when I was smoking pipes, my local B&M had a blend that I had settled on as my favorite. I quit smoking a pipe, moved from Ohio to NC, and then last month started up again. After buying a dozen or so blends, I got thinking that I'd love to be able to find the same one that I liked back in Ohio. I called my best friend back in Ky. that I grew up with and told him about taking up the pipe again. He mentioned that his good fishing partner and former Professor had always smoked the same stuff, and even bought it in 5 lb bags, so he found out for me that his buddy smokes 1Q. I bought some this week at my local TinderBox store(they call it Wilshire) and on the way home, lit up a bowl, and instant DejaVu, holy smokes it was the same one I use to smoke in Ohio. Eureka. What a great all around blend, and my best friend in Ky. said that when they go out fishing and his buddy lights up the pipe, he says it smells good enough to eat.

Today I went to the big JR Cigar store in town and looked over the blends and the one marked "Brendan's Choice" had small printing below that said Lane 1Q blend. The 5 lb bags sell for $ 129.95

I'm heading to the States tomorrow for a business trip. It just so happens that there's a tobacconist around the corner from the San Diego Convention Center, so I'll be sure to stop in and see what they have. One of my target tobaccos that I can't get locally is 1Q, so I'll try to pick up an ounce or two to try it. See what you all (sorry, y'all) are talking about.

As may have been noted in the other threads I've posted to since yesterday, I did pick up a couple of ounces of 1Q. 82nd Avenue Pipe and Tobacco in Portland, OR has Lane 1Q as their "House Tobacco #1". I got back to the hotel and sat down in the courtyard with a book and a bowl and had at 'er. It was really easygoing. Easy to smoke, easy to keep lit. Great taste and my wife loved the smell on me. Said she could still smell it on me about seven hours later (with a hungry look in her eye). Put all that together and I think I've got a new go-to smoke. I'll have to figure how much I go through (not a lot) and see if my infrequent trips to the States will cover me or if I've gotta start importing. I don't have a local tobacconist who carries it.

I am about to order 1 pound 1Q, 1 pound BCA, and 1 pound of the RLP-6.

I am going to cellar 3/4 pound of the 1Q, 1/2 pound of the BCA, and 3/4 pounds of the RLP-6.

Then I am going to mix a 1/4 pound of the 1Q and 1/4 pound of the BCA (This is an amazing blend if you haven't tried it, I will put some in the box pass when it comes my way) and then cellar that. I have never have the RLP-6 but I am going to mix the remaining 1/4 RLP-6 with the 1/4 BCA and see how that comes out, then cellar that as well.

(I also got some Dan tobacco Blue Note that I am going to smoke as soon as it gets here, and 10 oz of chocolate tobacco)

Mason jars and bale top jars, mason jars and bale top jars.... that is all!

    Hey Simon,

As my go-to baccy, a pound of 1Q will last me about a month give or take a week.
It seems to last a little longer if dip into my storage jar for each pipe rather than filling my pouch and filling from that when I'm at home.
So, as a tip (sort of) I only put enough 1Q in my pouch to fill a maximum of 3 bowls, and then only when I am traveling around town.
Any more and I'm tempted to smoke it up too quickly.

Hey guys I was wondering where you order your 1Q? The places that I found online charge an arm and a leg for shipping and handling and I was wondering which place is good for order under one lb? I would only be looking at getting maybe 8oz at the most.

Unclearthur has the right idea... I just did that very thing, waited and just spent $150 and got over 6 pounds of bulk (2 pounds is really cheap tobacco that I will use to tweak blends)and about 5 tins...

Lane 1Q is about 26.99 a pound at pipesandcigars.com right now.

To make A long story, very long, since I started smoking A pipe this time about 10 years. I haave only smoked two tabaccos. My main one is Smokers Pride vanilla cavendish by lane, if I got caught out on my bike for A couple of days and ran out I would go to CBW. For my burned out mouth I cannot tell the difference. LMAO now I have my Smokers Pride and I am looking at 8 other tins, and I just ordered 1/2 lb of that savanna that they were sending out samples of. you guys have got me hooked, and I am glad of it. If any of you have tried the vanilla cavendish how does it compare to CBW, I know it is not as clean few more stems and such, but I do beleive the taste is the same. In the past I paid 8.50 for 12 ozs of the sp,,,now it is up to 13.00 for 12 ozs, still cheaper than CBW

Been finding that the 1Q leaves a rather lingering not so pleasant aftertaste in my mouth sometimes till the next morning.

Changojoe, BCA is a Black Canvendish blend that is a very mild smoke. It doesn't really have a ton of flavor but the flavor it does have is very nice. It smells great right out of the bag and the room note is one of those that brings back memories of grandpa. It produces a ton of smoke which I find very satisfying, and it is just a great all around smoke. The only problem I have will it is I have to dry it out before I smoke it. If you don't it will be harder to keep lit!

Smoked 1Q for quite some time awhile back. Also had some RLP-6 just a few days ago. Its pretty much a toss up for me. I believe both are bulk versions of Captain Black White (RLP-6) and Royal (1Q) but without as much of the mummification processing of the tobacco.

Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are small and crunchy and taste good with ketchup.
