I was just out sharpening my knife, and I got to wondering, how many of we pipe-smokers regularly carry knives around with us? And of course, whether there are any good stories with the knives we may or may not carry.

I carry a Schrade Old Timer that was in my truck when my dad gave it to me. I carry it on my belt everywhere I go.

So, yeah...anybody else have a carry knife? It seems like the kind of thing we'd do, what with carrying a knife being a tad old-fashioned.

That is interesting. Yes always have. Don't feel dressed with out it. Due to a family emergency,I spent last summer in Portland, Oregon. Flying there, with carry on only, I could not bring my knife. I could not stand it after a week and bought a case trapper. My usual is an old timer. But, the case is a very fine piece.

On my 12th birthday my Dad gave me a little ivory handled knife that was engraved with "Squirrel Skinner". It was indeed a great skinner and I carried it with me for the next 20 years until it was lost in the gulf. I carry a little gerber that is similar in size to it now. I always have it with me. Of course I carry a pistol about 85% of the time now as well.

Always have my little Boker damascus folder in a pocket for everyday stuff.
Usually carry a smallish tactical knife as well, been a CRKT Hisatsu folder for the last few years.
I have about as many knives as pipes, which means way too many.

I got my first knife from my Grandfather when I joined the Cub Scouts, about 7 yrs. old. I have carried a pocket knife since. I still have that Cub Scouts knife along with probably 30 others.

OK. Stories... Many moons ago, I was preparing for a camping trip with my (at the time) girlfriend and her daughter (who after two weddings, which is a different story and probably not the one you just made up in you head, and an adoption later are now my wife and daughter) and found I couldn't fit those tiki torch things in the car without cutting some of the bamboo pole off. So, I got out my trusty Victorinox Swiss Army knife and began scoring the bamboo for the place I needed to cut.
My first clue that things were going to end messily should have been that I was scoring this bamboo in the near dark. The second clue was that that Victorinox wasn't the sharpest thing in the world although, it was, as you will see, much sharper than me.
So I started scoring but it was taking too long so I used more pressure and what happened? Yep! The bamboo came off and the blade went right into my left thumb. The only thing that stopped it from cleaving my thumb in half was my nail. I ran up to my wife's part of her Mom's house to the bathroom and immediately washed it off. She came to see where I had gone when she saw the splatters of blood going up the stairs to the bathroom. She drove me to the Emergency Room at the local hospital where a Doctor with spray-on hair proclaimed that it wasn't bad enough to need stitches, so he put a butterfly suture on it and sent me on my way. My Aunt saw it a week later and said I should've got stitches. Now my thumb is permanently deformed.

    Lessons:
Don't cut in the dark or near dark.
Most important: Always keep your blade razor sharp.

I carry a Leatherman Micra everywhere. The scissors and razor sharp blade get used daily. I sometimes use the file to correct the button on some of my pipes.
When working on cars, I usually belt on my Gerber Legend. (It has replaceable wire cutting inserts, replaceable saw blade, etc. Both replacement parts are available from a hardware store.)

I had an original leatherman Micra, pre patent, which inadvertently got confiscated by airport security on the way to a car rally in Newfoundland. It is such a normal part of my being I simply forgot it was a forbidden item....
I have since replaced that micro 3 times due to airports....

My Grandfather carried an Old Timer. I have found memories of it and all Schrade knives. This post is well timed because I found myself searching for Old Timers last weekend at an antique market. No luck.

Must be a Texas thing. I'm the same way. i also carry a Spyderso Double Stuff sharpener around. I've used it on everything from knives to mortuary needles (you can autoclave it).

One day we were all standing around and someone asked "Hey, do you have a knife?" Everyone within earshot laughed out loud. Then one person said, "careful, you'll lose a finger."

My family business is importing knives into Australia to supply shops and sell on eBay. I carry around a Victorinox Champ Swiss Army knife every day. My utility/hunting knife is a bit big to carry around in public but it's a Ka-Bar USMC black combat knife with a brown leather handle.

Currently a small, Gerber Chive. I've lost so many Case penknives, it makes me sick. The Gerber has a clip and so far, I've retained it. I keep a small SOG on my keyring, which is incredibly handy, but I HAVE TO remember to take it off my keyring when I fly. Flying, yeah, I lost a couple of nice Case knives that way as well......

In the Scouts, we use to teach the kids. "A dull blade is more dangerous than a sharp one." And there is merit to that. So often kids cut themselves because they got angry with a dull blade and went all gun ho.

As for carrying a blade. I sadly don't due to the fact that I have to go through a metal dedictor every day, and don't want the hassle of explaining it. I do pride myself on an old M3 Imperial blade I bought when I was eleven. It's got some weight, and the thing was, and still is sharp after almost 70 years. Thing even had a bit of blood on it when I got it. 0.0

I almost always carry a Spyderco Native that clips nicely inside my front pocket. I work in an office and never figured I'd use a knife all that often, but it's amazing how frequently I do need it. Have a few others as well -- I particulary like a CRKT Carson M16 -- but it's a bit larger than the Spyderco for EDC.

I carry a Gerber with me all the time. It gets annoying when we go to public venues and I forget to take it out of my pocket.

I have several knives, most my dad or my grandfather gave to me when I was a kid.

Ditto. Living and working around Washington DC, it's a crap shoot knowing when you might have to go through a metal detector to go meet in someone's office. Most places are getting nice enough to hold it for you while you're inside. The Newseum did that for me when I forgot to leave my knife in the car a while back.

    Beautiful knife Romeo.
I've been looking at Pukko knives for awhile, but never got around to buying one.
Been looking at Ragnars forge http://www.ragweedforge.com/
That knife of yours has got to be 30-40 years old ??

Yep. It's a magnificent knife, too, I wish I could find the smaller one--it's sprouted legs somewhere along the line. This is, I think, the second incarnation of wirkkala that has the laminated steel, as you can see the difference in color right along the edge--I confess to knowing next to nothing on the subject, however. It can get terrifyingly sharp. I hear they're collectible now, not sure I could part with it though. It's just so well designed, I've never held another that is close.

I've bought several Swedish Mora blades and made handles for them over the years. Ben's Backwoods has great prices on Moras and the Finnish Lauris. I've also got a Rosco post WWII damascus dagger with a double edge. My former girlfriend almost took her finger off with it.

a knife - one is allways with me - a beautiful Laguiole with 440 steel blade and olive wood on handle ... allways sharp as it can be
once i almost forgot to remove it when going into an American Embassy ... almost a bad mistake... it is allways with me so i forgot to do that

Nice collection Bowhatchie. Looks to be some fine knives there and I like the way they're displayed

I only carry anymore the one I got from Blackie, The wood carver who makes walking sticks, leather bags, walkingsticks, and small knives. Or the one I made. so I carry one of two hand made knives non of which could be confused for a store bought one.

A few months ago this thread got me to missing my old laguiole. For a while the EDC has been a rather undignified, though entirely utilitarian, folding razor knife. A glorified but well made box cutter. I found another laguiole, a very nice Gille, but...it just isn't the same as that one that I'd lost; there's no sentimentality behind it for me.

If you like it, send me a pm, we can talk.

Inspired by the testimonials from this thread, I thought I'd give the Kershaw Leek a try, and am very pleased with it so far. Sturdy and of a good tactile heft, yet very slim--perfect for every day carry. I find I appreciate the clip a lot more than I used to; with previous knives it was always poorly placed, poorly weighted, poorly designed. This knife nails it. The blade came sharp enough out of the box, and a few minutes with the diamond stones later it's frightening. Best in class in this price range, for sure.
Thanks for the suggestion on a great knife, members.
