Brand new to pipe smoking and I recently have been experiencing a sore throat so I haven't been smoking much. Sore due to lecturing at work, not because of smoking. Although I know smoking can irritate the throat more I just thought "screw it" and lit up. After a bowl my throat cleared up quite a bit. Don't know if this a 'calm before the storm' kind of situation but I feel good. Anyone ever have this happen?

Not especially, but I have never found a quality pipe blend yet that irritated my throat unless it was already irritated due to sickness or some other malady.
Pipe smoke can easily ravage the mouth and tongue, but honestly I find it fairly mild on the throat - I don't inhale for the most part so I suppose it has limited exposure.

Hmmm, I've had a sore throat, just from hot then cold weather back to back and sinuses, and I still have a bowl or 2 a day with not ill effects.
Dunno if it helps, but I don't think it hurts!

This is common and a well known side effect among rollie smokers. I think the smoke serves to numb the sore throat a bit and give some temporary relief. I have found this to be the case for my entire smoking life (20+ years).

Good to know. Going to be relaxing my voice for a while though just to be on the safe side.

I sure wouldn't attempt to associate pipe smoking with health benefits,

except perhaps for stress reduction and that only anecdotally. However, over

the holidays, we went to visit friends who were keeping their grandkids who

by chance came down with the horrible chest congestion and cough, in one

case, and projectile vomiting on the other. Just the usual kid stuff, and

I am so glad they pulled through it soon (we heard later). My wife who is long

past her Camels and Galois habit caught the chest bug and fought it for two

weeks. I patiently waited for my turn, but somehow slipped by (not to jinx

the deal here, I hope). Puffing a bowl or two most days, and as a break from

the holiday jabber, stepping outdoors for a pipe break. Probably just a

coincidence, but those tricky little varmint bugs may have lost their resistance

to baccy fumes as the population has dropped the habit. No promises,

not even a folk hypothesis here. Just an interesting observation. Incidentally,

I re-started pipe smoking, moderately I would say, as a stress relief when my

wife was in rehab after hip surgery. Bourbon seemed an impediment to getting

up and doing business for the household and her as she recovered. A long slow

smoke on the front porch after dark with Nightcap helped significantly, with

stress and mood.
