I am new to pipesmagazine and recently gotten into smoking pipes. I'm trying to buy my second pipe and i found a stanwell 'legend' estate pipe at a local pawnshop. It is crazy clean and looks fantastic. I think only been used like 2-3 times. Asking $85. It's a bent Dublin. They also have a SAVINELLI 'deluxe' ' Milano' 920KS little more use. Still clean Dublin for $85. What's your thoughts? tThanks

Those are good mid range brands, you can find those pipes cheaper in worse condition, but I would say $60-80 would be about right if they are truly in the condition you say. Try and talk em down, if no then make sure you understand the return policy, and if it is in your budget then I would say pull the trigger.

Hi cbaum02 and welcome to pipesmagazine.com! You've picked the best P&T forum on the web to join, for sure.
Both the Savinell and Stanwell pipes you speak of retail brand new at about what the local pawnshop wants. You can find them new all over the Internet and that is probably how the pawnshop priced them. I think the prices are fine if the pipes are almost new, but history dictates that pawnshops are good at dickering. Put a $50 and a $20 in front of the face of the salesman and say, "This is all I can afford for that pipe. Will you take it? I bet you'll walk out of the store with the pipe.

cbaum02, I'd price new Stanwells on pipesandcigars.com for comparison. Bear in mind, the ones you are looking at may have been made in Denmark, before Stanwell moved production to Italy, and some feel the Danish pipes are inherently better or more authentic. I own several of the Italian-made Stanwells and find them of high quality, but you have to make your own call on that. You should be saving quite a bit on estate prices, so if you aren't perhaps you should consider buying new ones, or from a different estate pipe vendor. These prices sound high for estate Stanwells, but if you really love the pipes, they are not outlandish.

Once your photos are on a photo hosting site (such as Imgur.com; Photobucket; Dropbox, etc.), select the full image, then Control-click (Mac) or Right-click (Windows) and choose copy image location. Now paste that URL (the full web address) into the box that pops up under IMG in the compose reply window of the thread in which you want the photo to show.

It may be that your Dropbox photos are not "public". In any event, the link needs to end in .jpg to be an embedded photo. (IMG tag)

Correct on the drop-box issue.

You can post a "public Link" to where the picture is stored OR you can upload the pictures to a web picture hosting site and then post here. (there is a sticky on posting photos on the main forum page).

It has been my experience that you can always get a pawnshop to come down at least 25% so I would start by offering $45 (that would give you room to move up). Another strategy that I employ with pawnshops is to wait a few weeks to see if they sell. Pawnshops only make money when they sell an item, well at least on items that they have purchased. If they do not sell then you can pit time against the their investment. There is a very good chance that they only paid $20 for each pipe.

I'm very far from being an expert on these things, but I recall reading about the Legend line earlier in the year and I believe that production of the line finished before they started production in Italy. That means you'd be getting a danish made pipe in great condition with what looks like a nice bit of flame grain.
While I'm a Savinelli fan and the Milano pipes are all hand made, I find them to be pretty 'plain' aesthetically (YMMV), personally I'd be jumping on the Stanwell and bartering down as much as possible.

FWIW, I have both Savs and Stanwells in my collection and I highly doubt you will be disappointed with the smoking qualities of either. For me it would come down to pure aesthetics and personal preference.
