I noticed this kit went on sale. I've looking for a starter pipe for a while now. I have a cheap cob I've been using. I have a couple of questions. Is the pipe in this kit worth it? Or should I go with a pipe like this: http://www.pipesandcigars.com/mobile/pipes/73694/mitchell-thomas-featherweight-pipes/ or should I just get a nicer cob?

I think you if exercise any of the options you've listed you'll be alright. The pipe and tobacco sampler is a very good deal. I've been known to smoke Borkum Riff tobaccos now and then. They're not unacceptable. That's another way of saying that the tobacco is nothing special but, that it will do in a pinch. Some guys like the Borkum Riff line and smoke them regularly.

My first pipe was $25 and that was $25 down the drain. I wish I had spent $50 on a nice estate (used) pipe instead. Hell, even a $30 estate pipe would have been far superior than the cheapies they list on P&C.
If you really aren't sure that you'll like smoking, I recommend a cob. If it's an MM, you really can't go wrong. But, if I could go back, I would look at the cheaper estate pipes that P&C sells...

I like the Featherweights, but the kit will get me a good pipe and the tool with money left over for me to get some different tobacco. I'm not particularly interested in the tobacco the kit comes with, but I can get some different stuff.

I gotta say it Evan, since you are here looking for advice: that Casillero will most likely overheat and gurgle on you. And you'll have to break it in.
I bet his guy will serve you far better and it still leaves you with extra cash for a tool and tobacco: http://www.pipesandcigars.com/pipes/83211/dr-grabow-omega-bent-billiard/#p-158300

Here's my situation. I have one of those prepaid gift cards and have about $30 left on it. It's probably dumb of me, but I'm trying to stay within that for the pipe, tool, tobacco and shipping. It's probably a bit unreasonable now that I think about it.
Edit:

I just noticed your first post Claypipes. That's what I'm afraid of, getting a bad pipe and ruining my experience. So an estate pipe would be the best thing?

Evan you can get the same Grabow Omega brand new for $30 at Pipes&Cigars. Also the pipe tool that is shaped like a pipe is much more useful than the one in the kit. Then you can go to a local drug store or discount smoke shop and grab a pouch of something you like. You can probably get all of it locally rather than pay shipping too.

Everything for $30 ain't going to happen unless you stay with a cob. For one thing you don't really even need the tool yet. A small pointed anything will work.
I just looked at P&C again. On the page of starters and gifts they have the 'Corn in the USA II' set. If it was me, that's my pick, because it has the tool I like, and no aromatics.

Yeah, I would recommend an estate. No, it doesn't have to be the Grabow. As tinner stated, it seems they didn't knock off too much for it being used, which is not nice of them. Any of their estates would do. Personally, I'd get one of P&C's estates in the $50ish range.
But, if that was out of my price range, and taking into account the knowledge I now have, I would get a corn cob. They're a little sweet at first, but that goes away. Then, they're fantastic! There are many seasoned pipers who ONLY smokes cobs. They're nothing to turn your nose up at, they're as cheap as it gets, light, and great smokers, especially for a beginner. You won't be sacrificing quality with one of these, well, maybe with the "mini" :) http://www.pipesandcigars.com/pipes/corn-cob-pipes/

I would agree with this kit ... 3 cobs, 3 OTC's and a tool.

That will get you started and those blends are pretty easy to pack and smoke.

My opinion is no. I'm not sure of the quality of that pipe and I can't recall any positive feedback on Borkum Riff tobacco so I'd say no. I'd look for something that's better quality and definitely get a better tobacco. Again that's just my two cents.

Sounds like a no brainer to me. 3 cobs and 3 tobaccos AND a tool for under $30.00. Among the cobs is one that is a big favorite of Cobbers,too..the Country Gentleman. Check out aristocob on youtube about the Cob.

I'd add it's important to get a pipe you want to smoke. These gentleman are all correct about the cob. However, I'm not a cob guy. Get something you're attracted to :)

For my part I am rather looking for something better and I really intend to get a better tobacco. Again this brand is wrong with my tastes and expectations
