Hi everyone my name is Jacob and this is my first post well 2nd after the new member post. That being said I got this pipe off of ebay for $14.00 and I hope to restore it but I worry the cracks on the outside of the bowl are maybe too big for fixing? I don't know since this will be only my 2nd pipe having restore and first one that was this bad of shape. Its a Peterson but I don't know what model or anything. Also what is the best way to fill cracks like this? Thanks! :puffpipe:

You need to post you pictures using either a commercial image site, like Imgur, or by uploading them to the Pipes Magazine site.
If you have cracks extending through the walls of the bowl chances are that the pipe is not going to be a good candidate for repair. But some folks here like a challenge and I've seen a few saves that I would not have considered possible.

Ooo. I'm no pipe repairman, so other's may disagree, but I'd say you just $15 out the window unless you just really wanted a beater to practice on (and then $15 is a lot for a beater).

The stem looks like it's in good shape. The metal looks good. The shape is terrific. The cracked bowl is a damned shame.

We've got a couple of members who I know can resurrect that pipe. Orley and Dave?

georged COULD do it, but I think he's more about meticulous stem work and finish work.
You must want to become a restoration specialist to have purchased this pipe from among so many others that you could have gotten for the same money.

That's a great ambition and I wish you success!

Welcome to the forums, and welcome to the hobby of pipe repair, restoration and macguyverism.
I've seen pipes like yours which are still being smoked. The cake, or carbon build up, inside the bowl is essentially holding the pipe together and creating a smoking chamber. Removing that cake via reaming and sanding will likely make the pipe impossible to smoke unless further repair efforts are undertaken.
I think I'd qualify that as more than a split or a crack, that there is a chasm. The only way I can see closing that gap to make the pipe smoke again is by reaming the pipe, cleaning all the cake, dottle and crud out of the gap, and then binding the bowl to draw the pieces of the pipe bowl as close together as possible. This might split the bowl entirely, but the pipe is already dead, what you're trying to do is resurrect it. So no harm in trying right? If you can reduce the gap, say with a vise or by binding it with wire then you could try to fill the remaining gap with briar dust and contact glue.
Truth be told, I'd sacrifice this $14 to learning and move that pipe into my parts box, and go look for something which is less finicky.
Good luck.

Well, it comes down to how much is your time worth to you. Making this pipe even temporarily smokeable will involve time and money. In the end, you'll have a pipe that might go for a few smokes. I don't buy cracked pipes. Some here do, but they're braver men than I. A pipe in this condition suggests to me that there is more to go wrong as the pipe has been so thoroughly mistreated. Even if you epoxy the cracks, it may smoke terribly. Personally, I don't think that it is worth the effort.

Honestly I don't think it would be worth the invest to spend your time or money trying to repair it.

Thanks for all the info everyone, only $14 isn't that big of the deal but I don't have better things to put my time into but who knows. Ill take pics as I go along. It should be noted, which it is hard to tell that the crack is only on the outside of the bowl. I don't know if that's a big difference maker or not but Ill give it a try.
