I read on another forum a while ago that most don't inhale
but prefer simply to savor the taste of the tobacco without
    going for that lung hit.

Other than a bit sometimes through my nose, a la “French inhale,” yes.

If I wanted something to inhale, I'd smoke a cigarette. But since I want something I can taste, it's a pipe. There's no point, in my opinion) to inhale pipe tobacco smoke. Inhaling will also leave less time for the smoke to make contact with your mouth and tongue, resulting in less flavor. Cigarettes are for a nicotine fix, which I no longer smoke, but the pipe is for relaxation and enjoyment.

Absolutely true. You are just not meant to do it and there are reasons for this.

True. So true in fact that I don't even inhale cigarettes either!

Inhaling pipe smoke would be a very bad idea and probably not very good for your lungs!

20 years ago, I inhaled everything. Cigs, Cigars, Pipe......

Today, I only smoke a pipe. And I do not inhale.

I smoke a pipe for the flavors. I get no flavor if I inhale, so I don't.

We harmonize quite well together actually. You should hear us all sing Somewhere Over The Rainbow. Embers is a great tenor, by the way. And Jaytex knocks it out of the park as a soprano... although he'd never admit. We tell him he's a baritone, to keep him happy. But Carolina is actually our baritone. I have a wide range. I inhale a puff or two now and then. I inhaled cigars, hard habit to break. Haven't found the need our desire with pipe smoking.

It's true. I used to be a heavy cigarette smoker before enjoying the pipe. There were several instances after being accustomed for some time to pipe smoking that I tried smoking cigarettes again and I found that I didn't inhale the cigarette smoke anymore.

This is me 100% of the time. Hard for some smokers to do but thats ok. I am usually exhaling 60% out my nose 40% out my mouth..Started this early on and the flavor/aroma palate just exploded in all the right ways

Surveys of tobacco smokers (by medical type people) consistently show that about 30% of pipe smokers inhale.

I was previously a heavy two pack a day smoker but I have never inhaled pipe smoke. To me the inhaled smoke from a filtered cig is far milder and less harsh than most pipe tobacco smoke.

Exactly right. When you inhale, you become anosmic and are no longer able to taste the tobacco. You get plenty of nicotine from a pipe without inhaling so why inhale? If you come from smoking cigarettes, there will be a small learning curve but you’ll get to the point where you will stop that almost reflex-like urge to inhale. Keep retrohaling though.

I can't speak for every pipe smoker, but personally, I don't inhale. Pipe tobacco is so rich and strong, for the most part, save for a few blends that double as RYO, that it likely wouldn't feel very good. The few times I've inhaled by accident with the wind blowing my freshly exhaled smoke back into my mouth when I breathed back in, I've coughed my head off for a half hour or so.

But Carolina is actually our baritone.

I try, I really do, and I can perform a mean falsetto when the mood requires it! Anthony does harmonize quite well, especially once kicked in the nads, but that's when he falls prey to the fluid to aid his aching...uh...berries, then sees more unicorns and then all hell breaks loose, so we can't typically have but one of them a night and usually it's the encore.

Key being most, yes, it is true, as studies have been done. Of course some do, but I don't recommend this.

IME, most cigarette smokers who switch to a pipe inhale. I was one of those for decades and I had to quit entirely for a period of time to overcome the desire to inhale.

I've also observed that a lot of pipe smokers who claim not to inhale do so, at least some of the time.

I don't inhale either. I love retrohaling once in a while though. Same thing applies to cigars as well.

If retrohaling is pulling smoke into your mouth then blowing it out your nose, then I do that a lot. It lets me savor the smell of the tobacco better. Sucking it into my lungs makes me cough and I don't do that intentionally.

I inhale about 20 times per minute and exhale roughly the same number of times. Even when sleeping!
