I'm new to pips, and i do clean the stem each time after every bowl. there is a strong ashtry smell coming from the mouth piece,. just want to make sure that is normal. still getting the hang of lighting and packing the pipe.

You have to clean out the bowl with a paper towel , use it like a cork screw .
Welcome Salsa!
I think even a clean pipe smells a bit ashy. If you find that too and it bothers you, consider using a pipe sweetener -- a few are commercially available. Some also use high proof alcohol, such as 151 Bacardi on a pipe cleaner through the stem and shank --even a bit on a Q-Tip in a clean bowl.
Was an estate pipe? If so I would do a deep clean. Soak in oxy clean for 10-30 mins, scrub with magic eraser, dry and oil and it should be MUCH better
For the unaware --
Many estate pipes are already clean -- even those on eBay, but not all of course, though clean pipes bring more money -- and all estate pipes sold on internet sites such as SPC, Mke-Law (Dave Neeb), Smokers Haven, Briar Blues, Marty Pulver, etc. are all meticulously cleaned prior to sale.
Even so, it is possible that an estate pipe (or any pipe), while relatively clean, could use some "freshening up," hence my suggestions above.
Every estate pipe I buy, gets a complete cleaning and reconditioning before I put it in my mouth. I guess I am just fussy that way. Even with a new pipe, I run a cleaner dipped in Alochol or Brandy before I smoke it.
