Question - I would assume some of these are straight grain, most of these are flame grain, and there are some spots where the grain pattern disappears, so it was sold as a second. Is my assumption correct?
Note - I am lazy to take out the DSLR, so I did best I could with my phone - however the pipe looks better in hand than in the photos.

Yeah, it could be a second-tier pipe for any number of reasons, but as you say the grain vs shape is not super wonderful, and it's pretty washy on the shank, a few very small pits, so it's just not a first-grade pipe in this guy's grading scheme. Certainly doesn't make the pipe less enjoyable as a smoker.

I've seen Nordings with less than stellar grain and even a few little pits here and there. I think it's those spots on the shank where the grain "ghosts" out for lack of a better word including the pits that did that one in as a second. It's still a nice pipe in my opinion. I'd smoke it :)
