    Hello,

I am new here and hope to try out my first pipe smoke with some of my dads old pipes he bought. I looked at the names and numbers on the sides of each pipe and wrote what I could make out so if something looks wrong I have a picture of each so just ask and I will do what I can thank you very much.

    Welcome Redbeard!

Sorry to disappoint you, but from the info your provide here, none of those pipes you list appear to be worth very much if you're planning to sell them.

You do have some very nice pipes though -- and of course, since they are from your Dad, I am sure they have a great deal of sentimental value.

The first pipe, a BC and the Kiko sound particularly interesting. For example, the Kiko is an African Meerschaum. African Meers are sought by some collectors and Meerschaum from Africa is no longer available.

If you're planning to keep them and need more information, photos would likely help a lot. Folks like photos here.

I thought I read somewhere on these forums there's a link on how to post photos on the PM Forums front page (there damn well should be LOL) but I can't find it. I did do forum search for you though.

This linked thread has a post with step-by-step instructions (with pictures).

I like that Mariner and the Kiko mate.

If at first you don't succeed, have another bowl.

Thank you madmurdoc, that one is interesting because the name appears to be hand carved into the side. It is hard to read since it is so faint

Captainsousie, I mss spelled that one,it actually reads: HILAN and then it has a metal strap over the rest. It has a stamp on it of something that looks like a S|/ with a dot over it and a box next to that with some symbols. Going to look on the website that was provided to me

It reads HILAN.... Don't see why they would cover the name. Maybe it was a different mouth piece put on this one?

    Also, what is "Briar"

Ahh I see, so these things have been sitting around for a very long time. Very dusty, they all smell a bit different... Which one should I clean and use for a first timer? I notice some have two holes at the mouth and some one....

The band would probably be a repair band as I've seen SJV bands on quite a few pipes with cracked shanks. The pipe itself is probably a Hiland's.

My favorite looking one is the Ancient mariner. I think this may be the one I use for the first bowl, it seems pretty clean. Anything suggested for cleaning it before attempting to pack?

Lot of nice looking grains there.

I know what I need, smoke, I can't recall the last time I tasted it....Gandalf in the mines of Moria.

"we shall have to share pipes, as good friends must at a pinch'....'I keep a treasure or two near my skin, as precious as rings to me. Here's one: my old wooden pipe. And here's another an unused one...He held up a small pipe with a wide flattened bowl, and handed it to Gimli. 'Does that settle the score between us', said Merry. 'Most noble hobbit, it leaves me deep in your debt."

The Butz-Choquin should read "St. Claude France" (That is where it was made). Like Captainsousie mentioned, the metal on the Hilands is a repair band. Probably had a small crack in the shank.
IMO the Savinelli, the Kikko and the Mariner are the nicest of the bunch.

Thank you for your great feedback, that was a mistake on my part lonestar. The Butz does say St. Claude. Auto correct may of sen I made that mistake lol. I took a few better pics and will post the three i have with me and that have the least amount of build up. I dont have cash to purchase tools so I was hoping i could do a quick clean-up somehow. The pics follow...

That treatment seems a bit harsh for that little bit of oxidation LOL. I do not have the sand paper though so I will need to wait i suppose

Thank you and I believe I will be busy for quite some time

Also, the search on here is odd... Doesn't seem to show any result pertaining to what I entered.

So my question is how do you restore a bowl.... If it has hardly any residue in the bowl can I just use it now?

I say go for it, if you get a nasty taste from it, you'll have to sweeten it: pour some sea salt in it and pour some everclear in the bowl and let it sit for a day like that. If you do that, be sure to wipe the outside of the bowl immediately if you drip any alcohol onto it, it will eat away the finish quite fast. You can find some clearer info about 'sweetening the bowl' around the forums.

Thank you madmurdoc! You have been a big help I have actually just finished one steam. I don't. Have the sandpaper or the oil but I used olive oil and it looks great as of now.... Will see how it holds up.

Another newbie question: I have smoked black and milds a bit and like the flavor or wine and origional. You know how that compares to pipe smoking or any tobacco flavors?
