Hello, my name is Yohannes Raynar and I'm new in here and want to introduce my self and also little bit about Indonesia's wooden pipe that i usually smokes.

At my place there is no white heath grows, so there is no white heath burls or briar that can made to be a pipe in here, so peoples in here make pipes from other materials that can provide. The most popular is tamarind woodheart or Galih asam, is made from tamarind woods/tree that had grow for over then a century, and i want show you guys this tamarind pipes and others indonesian pipe.

Sorry for my poor English.

The pipes that i had shown here are my favorites, they smokes good, without extra taste or flavor but few of them more heavier then briar so not easy to smoke it with free hand style.

Thank you Dan :) , briar pipes at my place are fancy stuff and it quite expensive. So those (including me) who want to smoking a pipe, use exotic woods thats available to make it as a smoking pipe.

Very nice pipes.
I was in the Philippines in December and saw many, many pipes for sale that were made from some type of very hard, very dark, light wood. I believe some type of Ebony. I bought one, but haven't smoked it yet.

Thanks for showing us your pipes, Joeray. Tell us more about pipe smoking in Indonesia when you can. What type of tobacco do you smoke? Is it grown locally or imported?

Hello guys, sorry i had trouble to log in this site in these days and i dont know what is the problem, its only appears "network connection error" but not with others site. :crying:
Some of my local wooden pipe is smokes great, especially the tamarind woodheart pipes and the Johar woodheart pipes and for the tamarind woodheart the problem is the weight is more heavier then briar pipes, is rather difficult to make freehand smoking. The bowl of tamarind and johar pipes is quite cool smoking and easy to built cake, but this is totally depends on the craftmen's skills about making the air hole, and i'm lucky, Indonesian pipemakers can make a good airhole now.
The tobacco that i usually use is local growth tobaccos and particularly planted and growth at Java island, Celebes and Lombok Island (near Bali Island), like Srinthil (Javan tobacco), Kastori (javan and Lombok), Maesan (javan), Soppeng (Celebes), and local virginia (planted at Lombok Island). And the most popular tobaccos for pipe smoker in Indonesia is Srinthil and Soppeng, soppeng is some kind of Indonesian local cavendish that based on virginia leaves that growth at Southern Celebes Island, using coconut sugar and put them at a bamboo stick and then fire cured. The taste and flavor is very great, with a little bit strong kick of the vit N with the scent of coconut sugar and cinnamont flavour also with a little bit smell of fresh bamboo. If you like an extra strong kick with a little bit sour and spicy taste (like herbs or oriental's spice) Srinthil will fulfil all your needs. Srinthil is a legend and the most highest values of local Indonesian tobaccos. This tobacco is very rare and not easy to get and the price is quite expensive.
Im smoking both imported and local tobaccos, right now my favorite is VaPer and English. Escudo Navy Deluxe and Dunhill Night Caps are some of my favorites.

Here is the Johar Woodheart, this wood if not well cured and not boiled well the taste is not good. The sap is quite thick and will added an extra flavor, little bit sour or similar taste with Robusto Cigars

Thank you shaintiques, yes but not many vary of native Indonesian tobaccos that's really delicious and fit to western pipe smokers. Most of Indonesian pipe tobaccos is little bit sour or bitter with strong kick nicotine, but the sweetest is Soppeng, almost all pipe smokers love it, beginners or seniors.

Welcome to the forum, Yohannes. It's great to have someone from Indonesia join us.
Is the tamarind that the pipes are made from the same tree that bears the sour tamarind fruit? One of my favourite foods is sour tamarind soup - if pipes can be made from the same tree, it is a very precious tree indeed!

joeray, welcome to Forums. These are impressive pipes, both in design and in finish. The only pipes

I have that are not briar, corn cob, or clay, are made of Mountain Laurel from the Appalachian Mountains

in the states of North Carolina and Tennessee. These were tried mainly during World War II when the

usual briar wasn't available because of the war. The pipe carver I know can still get the Mountain Laurel

and makes a few pipes from it, but it is getting more rare. It's smoking qualities are quite good, but as

with your wood, I think it has to be carefully cured.

pipinho, this pipe carver who works in Mountain Laurel does not sell his pipes online,

and I think it would be rare to find his pipes on ebay. I asked him about selling online,

and he said if he did that, he'd spend all his time taking pictures. He sells only two places,

in person, at the North Carolina State Fair and at the Triangle Area Pipe Smokers Pipe and

Tobacciana Expo at the fairgrounds in April. He has an email address, but he does not answer

emails. You might have to get in touch by snail mail. His web site is:

www.perryspipesandrepair.com. He does most of his pipes in briar, so you would have to

inquire specifically about the Mountain Laurel pipes. His prices are reasonable for handmade

pipes. Because Mountain Laurel is not as readily available as briar, those pipes cost more.

I hope this helps. Other items that might be of interest, Mr. Brog, one of the sponsors of

this site, sells pear wood pipes, and Cup O Joes, another sponsor, sells Rosewood pipes for

a mere $20. Links are at the side of the Forums pages.

@4dotsasieni : Yes, that is the same tamarind wood that the trees produce a sour and sweet fruit that you had made a soup. At my place this wood had lot of myth and legend and the common use is for praying beads, handle of traditional Indonesian blades (Keris), stick of the spears, and lot of other mithycal use. I really love this wooden pipe because not only for it's great smokes but also the myth and stories background that follows this woodheart. The tamarind woodheart is quite rare and very precious stuff. For adding the native/traditional values, these wooden pipes using buffalo's horn for the stem.

@mso489 : I have a friend from US that merried with Indonesian woman and live at Jakarta (sometimes at Bali also) that have same pipe like you, made from mountain laureel. He shown me his pipe and his pipe is very beautiful and I ask him to sell his pipe to me and he was refused because he told me if this kind of pipe is very rare and hard to get and he just offer me mountain laureel carving block but he don't tell me about the price until now.

@Pipinho : I buy these wooden pipe at my local facebook pipe smoker club.

This is my wife's Rosary, the beads is using tamarind woodheart. This precious give is a present from the pipe maker. He is a very generous friend and I consider him as an uncle of my self.

And here is my 1st Indonesian exotic wooden pipe and I use it for over then 1 year and this is a great smoker, neutral taste like a briar pipe, and cool. The bowl's material is from Kendhalisodho wood, one family with Indian Rosewood/sonokeling and the stem is using buffalo's horn with a silver band.
