I'm so glad our nanny politicians are out there to tell us how to live. Another backhand to those in "The Land of the Free". At least they still have there bars and shops.

I liked the bans where communities made it illegal to smoke outside even at home, but totally legal to drive Hummers around everywhere.

I do like the last bullet point reminding employers they are STILL not allowed to discriminate based on off-duty tobacco use.
My optimist says: Congrats to Indiana for protecting a little bit of choice.
My pessimist says: The word 'still' implies that it may not last much longer.
Usually my pessimist is correct but then again, I live in New York State.
All in all, as far as bans go, it approaches reasonable but for the record, I would rather have it be up to establishment owners to ban or not to ban.

I still cant see this as a victory. They just didnt get all the control they wanted but got the inital idea started. Much easier for them to grow onto this. Its like me demanding 2 Dunhills from Kevin. He saying no, so I say ok ok just 1 Dunhill and he sends it on over. (BTW let me know Kevin if that would work)

If B. Hussein Obama has done anything during his tenure as POTUS, it is, to quote Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve." The sleeping giant in this case is the American Voter. Despite our current circumstances in the growing liberalism of this nation, 71% still self identify themselves as Christian, and almost 70% of Electoral College territories are considered conservative. Obama has ignited that voter base much like he ignited the youth voter base on 2008. People are more poor, less well off, and generally dissatisfied with virtually every decision this man has made. See Wisconsin recall vote results... The sleeping Giant is very angry.
In refraining my remarks against our sitting POTUS, I'll close by saying that the man is a political coward. On every major fight he's had for "his" projects in "transforming" America, he has let someone else lead the charge. Americans do not like cowards.

I think they realized that if they squelch smoking too much they will be out a lot of tax dollars not just from smokers but from businesses that would decline simply because they rely on a smoke-friendly atmosphere to thrive.

I'm located in Ohio so of course Indiana's laws don't affect me. (But as this stuff is sweeping the land I fear it soon will.) I am an employer and out of the 12 of us 3 smoke cigarettes and I smoke a pipe. We do operate smoke free inside the shop which is kind of irritating but I go outside to smoke with everyone else.
The problem I have is the 8' from the door BS. I stand out front by my door and smoke a pipe once in a while. I won't be moving 8' feet away from the door. It's gonna get ugly. Granted we are not a retail establishment with the public coming and going so I don't think it would ever be an issue.
Like herbinedave says "Orwellian" is right.

Baby steps..Here in Ontario the anti smoking fad started sooner. Mild restrictions of about 15yrs ago are now very close to a total ban. No public places including bars, casino's, race tracks, businesses, and even some public open air areas. Can't smoke in your car if someone is under 16yrs old. To top it off their are still people pushing for more restrictions. Soon you will have to hide in your garden shed to have a smoke.

The really weird thing is if everyone did stop smoking our government would never even come close to having enough tax dollars to pay for all the services we all enjoy now. They are actually shooting themselves in the foot. Here in Ontario a tin of tobacco is 25.00 and 67% of that is tax, do the math, the government is making billions in tobacco taxes, so where will the money come from after tobacco is gone? So my American friends just look a bit north to see the future.

God I made myself so depressed I'm going out on the deck for two bowls now.

+1 reichenbach It should be completely up to the establishment owner. If you don't want to be around smoke go the F@%K away; like wise if I see a no smoking sign I will go somewhere else.

bornagainbriar, that post strikes me as being pretty darn political. We can discuss smoking laws, but are not supposed to discuss politics. Please note Rule #6.

Jud, thank you for pointing that out. Political, and religious. Not cool. I'm relatively new here, but at least I can follow the rules.

If people want to make "smoke-free" places; why can't we have "nonsmoke-free" places. "If you come to my establishment you must have a pipe or cigar in hand." "Non-smoking prohibited." It just makes since to me - why not be fair about it? :puffy:

@ Jud I second grafikchaos. I was going to say the same thing until I saw your post.
Most states have sensible bans from my experience. Here in Wisconsin as long as the tobacco shop was around before the ban took effect you can still smoke in it. That means all those tax evading ROY stores that have tobacco they claim is pipe tobacco you can't smoke in.

This is pretty much the ban we have in PA now. It's in reality not too different than the conditions that had evolved beforehand -- "stand alone" bars still can allow smoking, places that serve food can allow it only if there food sales are a relatively low percentage of overall income, B&M's are exempt. A smoking establishment cannot admit anyone under 18, but it's still nice to have a few places away from home that I can retreat to. Now finding a pipe-friendly bar can still be a challenge, particularly since I'm wedded to blends that have room notes that could kindly be described as "old socks."
