I'm interested in a couple of tobaccos that are available only in Europe, e.g., JF Germain Rich Dark Flake and Condor. Where might I start? Last time I tried I spent a couple of hours screwing around with the credit card, only to be told the shop didn't sell to America. To make it worst, my bank suspended my card because they suspected fraud when I had so many transaction attempts fail.

Or if someone has Condor or Rich Dark Flake for sale or trade, please let me know. Thanks. Pax

I ordered from Gauntley's of Nottingham, no problems. It's not cheap but it's comparable to Canadian prices. I'm quite sure they ship to the U.S. Order arrived in about eight days even with Canada customs and the post office. That's actually quicker than Smokingpipes and 4Noggins. No problems at all and I'm awaiting my second order.

I guess the Brits still consider Canada part of the UK. Gauntley's doesn't ship to USA either. This was posted on their entry page:

In the USA? Please note unfortunately we cannot send tobacco products to the USA.

    But thanks anyway, Dave.

Edit NOTE: our threads crossed, accounting for the double info.

Both mrsnuff.com and pipedivan.com ship tobacco to the US.

Yes, many things catch my eye whenever I visit either site but it is all out of my price range so I will stick with what I can order from here in 'Merica.

Brass is right. Canada is part of the "Commonwealth" and tobacco ships readily via credit card payment. I have some Canadian relatives and their access to English tobaccos gives them a never-miss host gift for a visit at our house. Our Canadian brothers have an amazing resource with that access. Perhaps the benevolent tobacco gods way of making up for those scandalously high prices those fellows have to pay.

I have personally purchased pipe tobacco from Segar-and-Snuff in London, and had the product shipped to the United States without problems. However, I do not believe that they sell either JF Germains - Rich Dark Flake or Condor. Another U.K. mail order tobacco company called G.Q. Tobaccos does have both products and will ship to the United States; I have not personally bought from G.Q., so I cannot comment on their customer service, but their website does look pretty good.

I've never ordered pipe tobacco from outside the US, not necessarily from the UK, but I am intrigued. Ordering cigars from the UK was always easy until they hit US Customs and sat and sat while I sweated and sweated, haha. I wonder how many folks who have ordered from outside the US get hit with Customs fees?

I am exactly the same boat as you Brass except I'm looking for St Bruno, some plugs and Germain's Medium Flake. I had always heard GQ does not ship to US, it is even stated on there site. But on this post they said they were successful. I was thinking of giving it a shot on payday this Friday. I was going to try pipedivan.com as they have Condor plug and others but really want more St Bruno since I got some from St. Simon. St Bruno is what I had been looking for in Lakelands, I just love it. It would be my all day smoke if I could get enough.

I was mistaken on G.Q., I just read their shipping page more carefully, they will only ships pipes and accessories to non-commonwealth countries and will "reject" and "not fulfill" tobacco orders. I apologize for the confusion.

I ordered a pouch of St. Bruno, a pouch of Condor and 50 grams of JF Germain's Rich Dark Flake from G.Q. Tobaccos. The system accepted the order without spitting it back. Hopefully, it will arrive ok. But between taxes and VAT and whatever, the total for 200 or so grams of tobacco came to $60.00. That will scratch my curiosity itch but can' afford to smoke them long term at those rates.

Friends across the pond can be a big help. But any way you manage it, expect sticker shock. With taxes, etc, 8 OZ of Rich Dark Flake, assuming that you can find it, will run more than $120.

Anyone know of a good way to get some Strang in the US and how much? That's one I'd like to try sometime.

Ordering Strang is really easy. Just go to the Motzek website, use google translate if you don't know German, fill in the order form and then wire payment

The prices are in Euros. It is reasonable enough. I have done it. Herbert Motzek is a class act.

If you have an issues, bounce back here. I can give you more details

Yeah, it might be worth emailing Glynn to see what he says. Otherwise, a friendly pipe smoker in the UK willing to ship a bulk package over to the US for further distribution would be handy!

Crimminy, there goes my August and September tobacco budget. Now I understand what they mean by

in for a penny, in for a pound.
    Well, I'll keep everyone appraised.

The irony is that I was hoping Rich Dark Flake could stand in for Stonehaven. At that price, I could buy Stonehaven on ebay. But some Stonehaven fans have said that RDF is at least as good, maybe better, than Stonehaven.

That's how I'm rationalizing it. I used to go to extremes to purchase imported beers, in the days before good American craft beers became common.

    Hello Booker,

No need to go to the bank and do a wire. I used Xoom. It is an internet based wire offering. It shines in going to places like Germany that have very different banking processes than the U.S.

The fees are better than most banks and you know the FX exchange rate up front

Also, this is a great way to purchase from folks in the UK. Gets around the credit card issue

Xoom is well funded, has great reviews and I have used them several times with absolutely no issues

Thanks mrdottle999...Xoom may be good but I've read some less than stellar reviews. As anything, could be just a few unhappy customers and as they say those are the ones that make the most noise. I'm happy you have used them with great success.

I still wish he took paypal.

Yeah sadly it is the credit/debit card restrictions which scupper our sales to the states. Some retailers do flaunt the rules, i am a little more cautious. But if anyone wishes to order from America, please PM me for more details and please do not post openly on here what solutions are offered, *wink*

Another good system to make international payment using is Transfer Wise, we use them to pay our international suppliers. The fees are very low and takes about 1.5 days for the funds to come through.

Both use the same basic treacle topping. While I detected a slight difference in the bag aroma, when smoked the taste is about the same. So close is the smoking flavor, that had I not known that I was smoking RDF, I wouldn't know the difference. So if you're hoping for something with enough of a difference to be potentially "better" or noticeably different, save your money and go after Stonehaven here. Any perceived difference in the actual smoking taste is going to be more a matter of suggestion than anything else. But if curiosity must be satisfied, give it a whirl, and then be glad that you don't HAVE to pay those prices for Stonehaven here.

If I had to choose between RDF and St. Bruno it would be St. Bruno all day long.

Yeah i would always buy Stonehaven if you have the chance, that way you are not paying the $150 per 1lb in pipe tobacco duty. RDF was made for the UK so we had an alternative to Stonehaven over here, i find the topping a little different. RDF is a bit more plumy and i find SH slightly more chocolatey. That said i have no opened a fresh 1lb bag of stonehaven, only ever had it in trades and the tobacco had already been exposed to air. I know many others who swear they are the same, but i know they had to slightly alter the blend to avoid issue with estorerica (or whatever the correct company name is)

I do admit that I have an itch that must be scratched. Glynn mentioned that RDF is as hard to find in the UK as Stonehaven is here. Sablebrush, thanks for the comparison review.

Davet, my reaction was similar to yours upon receipt of Grassmeere. I could could smell it when I opened the shipping container. I forget whether it was loose or packaged. But I haven't forgot how overwhelming the aroma was that emanated from the styrofoam peanuts beneath which the package was buried.

Support the small to medium businesses, buy it from GQ Tobaccos

Albert Einstein was once quoted as saying, “I believe that pipe smoking contributes to a somewhat calm and objective judgment in all human affairs.” One of the reasons behind this statement is that pipe smoking is meant to be a slow leisurely activity. It takes patience to smoke a pipe. Unlike cigarettes and cigars, there is a certain amount of technique to smoking a pipe. Where cigars and cigarettes can just be picked up, lit and puffed on, pipes require the development of a technique in order to get the best smoking experience.

I’ve tried to get a hold of the new owner of GQ on 4 different occasions regarding this subject and he has yet to respond. I’ve tried to just go ahead and purchase tobacco from them but the site will not allow the transaction to complete. It’s a crying shame, I think GQ has the best selection worldwide and he hands down had the cheapest prices on Condor. I really miss doing business with him.

GQ doesn't sell tobacco to the US. For a brief period after buying the business from Glynn, the new owner did sell to the US. Then he found out that he could get in a mess of legal trouble and ceased.

Do you have any friends in the UK, or any friends traveling there? That's about your only hope of acquiring RDF. The road is otherwise closed.

It is also, I would say, "unsettling" for me to look at GQ's website every time, for the fact that they do not send tobacco to continental Europe. I am also a fan of various UK tobacco Germain's and Condor and St. Bruno, etc, and I also want to try some of the GQ tobacco.

GQ also has some of the most updated and comprehensive collection of Falcon pipes - there is nowhere to get the limited edition Falcon pipes on the internet other than from their online store.
