Tobacco use in general. When did you start?

I was 18. I got some tobacco from my grandad, some Rum & Maple mixed with Van Eerkoms' "FOX". I bought a cheap pipe from a general dealer and the rest, well that's history.

I started with cigarettes at 15 and smoked my first pipe and cigars that same year. I've been off the cigarettes close to twenty years and I have no regrets about quitting. One of the best things I ever did for myself.

I started at 15 with cigarettes and some machine made cigars, swishers and white owls, then moved to cigars by 17 and by 18 I started smoking a pipe. Now I've almost go two years under my belt with a pipe.

Cigarettes between 18 and 19 gave em up for a while and then picked them up about a year ago. I've been on the pipe for a few months now and haven't had a cigarette since and I plan on keeping it that way. I'm 24 now, by the way.

My first experience with tobacco was when I was 8 years old! My uncle gave me some Skoal wintergreen snuff and I puked for an hour! He also gave my cousin some the same day, he was 6! When I was about 10 he would bring me and my cousin cans of Skoal Bandits every now and then. I've been using some kind of tobacco ever since. I'm now 30.

Tried my brothers pipe after he passed, I was 40, and I didn't stay with it. Picked it up again at 63. I am in less of a hurry and more mellow now, so it is something I enjoy.

Bought my first pipe in college, the weekend I turned 18. It was a Grabow pipe and Captain Black, both bought at a pharmacy. Some cigars mixed in, but the pipe was always cheaper!

about a decade ago, at 15. skoal vanilla (blech!). I've been on and off chewing tobacco since then. Been on for awhile now.

1st pipe at 20. didn't really know what I was doing until just over a year ago. Thankfully, this website has really opened my eyes. No more tongue bite, barely any re-lights, no more overly moist tobacco, started appreciating and enjoying non-aromatics, learned different ways to prepare flakes, trying match lights, tamping properly, packing properly. The list goes on and on.

And it's all thanks to you, my brothers of the briar (and cob, and clay)! Thank you so much for all your help, insight, and wisdom.

Earliest experience, when we were six, a friend and I used to take packs of Luckies and Camels
he pilfered from his chain smoking dad (who later quit) in his little Radio Flyer wagon down to
the "prairie," an empty lot, where we would watch the construction of a new house from under
a bush. This resulted in me going home and turning a pale shade of green and lying down on
the couch. A few cigs in my teens, with a cousin. A cigar now and then when I went to
journalism school, when they had ashtrays in the student union. A few cigars when I was in the
Navy, and first pipe smoking after I got married in the mid-1970s. So I started first at about 6.

Cigars at 16. First pipe and cigs at 18. Chewed for about 6 months around 19 or 20. Finally kicked the cigs again (third times the charm). I'm 26 now and hope to enjoy my pipe and occasional cigar for a long time.

I first gave pipes a go when I was 18, but it was mostly off for seven years. I picked up the briar seriously about three years ago. I will have a cigar from time to time. Never have been a cigarette smoker.

I was in the 5th grade... 11 years old.
I asked my Dad if I could have a couple of puffs of his pipe.
I took one... and got one hell of a case of spins.
I tried to get down from his lap....
He said: "Where you going? You still have a puff comin'."

Besides the occasional puff of a cigar offered by my stepdad, I had my first smoke at the age of 18, when I was off at college. Swishers and the like back then. First pipe at 19. Off and on both pipes and cigars in the intervening decade and change. Never smoked a cigarette, I'm (probably unduly) happy to say.

Indirectly, when I was 4 years old. I'd snuggle up on my Grampa's lap while he smoke George Washington in an old pipe brought over from Ireland. I learned how to open the tin, load the pipe, and to this day, I hold my pipe the way Grampa did. I was 20 when I bought my first pipe, that was 43 years ago.

Never smoked cigarettes, been an occasional (5 or 6 a year) cigar smoker for about 10 years.
Just started with pipe smoking about 3 months ago. I'm not sure why I started, but it's been very enjoyable so far...

I tried my dad's Red Man when I was 7, in the car on a winding mountain road. He didn't know what had happened. I didn't know what had hit me. I thought my mother was going to kill us both.

First cigarette around 10 or 11 - Camel unfiltered. Corncob pipe followed, as did Skoal.

I am now only a pipe-smoker, and happy about it.

I was 18. Started smoking cigarettes and pipes while in college. Gave up on the pipe in college when I nearly set my longish hippie hair on fire. Quit cigs cold in 1983 and eventually returned to pipe smoking around 1988-89.

I went away to sea with the merchant navy at 16.
I worked with “Artie” the old carpenter who had been torpedoed in the North Atlantic during 1943. He was my hero; he smoked a pipe which smelt just like my uncle’s who was also a father figure for me. For three months I was forever scrounging a smoke from him and eventually bought my first pipe on a run ashore in Piraeus.

    13. Smoked cigs off and on through the first three years of high school. Some cigars now and again but nothing too heavy. Started smoking more around 17-18yr and that's the time I joined the Army. I smoked cigs and the occasional cigar/pipe until I was about 25. I quit for 3yrs then went back to it after my divorce (wasn't stress related). I quit again for about 2yr then started again and I have no idea why. I smoked cigs again for about 3yr, then one night when working I lit a smoke and I didn't feel well. I started to dry-heave and got really dizzy to the point I had to sit side saddle in my car with the door open on the side of the road. It's funny now that I picture it lol. I quit smoking cigs that moment and haven't wanted one since. I find the smell of them pungent to the point of making my nose itch and sometimes sneezing. About three days after I quit I went into a store and bought a cheap brylon Medico pipe and a pouch of Captain Black White and a tin of EF. That was about 9mo ago. I don't have that pipe anymore I sold it about 3 weeks after starting back on the pipe. I went out and picked up a couple pipes, then I had two more given to me. The collection keeps growing and there's no turning back LOL!

I started smoking cigarettes around 11 or 12. I have been either smoking or chewing tobacco ever since. Although, I haven't smoked a cigarette in 8 years. Can't seem to shake the chew though. If I could smoke my pipe inside at work and the house, i think it would be my only tobacco.

Wow a lot more of you didn't start smoking till way later than i imagined. See my brother in law, is 16. Already smokes cigs occasionally, and what not. He is showing interest in my pipes. I don't know how to go about it, with out "contributing to a minor". Any suggestions?

    I was 17.

As long as I got a pipe full of baccy and a nose full of snuff, I'm a happy camper

Almost 39 years old before I ever messed with any tobacco! It was a wooden missouri meerschaum and a middletons blend baccy!

In 1969 when I was 12 I began smoking Tijuana Smalls and Wolf Brothers Rum soaked Crooks. I quickly took up cigarettes that year and have been smoking something ever since. I started the pipe in 2000 while I was a big cigar smoker.

10 or 11, going into the store and asking for Lucky Strikes "for my dad and he said not to forget the matches."

Quit cigs in my late twenties. Started the pipe at the end of high school, cigars a couple years later. Been on and off since.
