I have worked on my collection to the point I like smoking them all but...I find I go through fazes. One week I'm all into smoking falcons, next week cobs grab my attention, then big briars. How do you guys select what to smoke or is random?

I randomly select a random pipe, at random, of course.

    Randomly. Just sheer, unadulterated randomness.

Very spur of the moment for me. Picking a pipe to buy though, that's another story.

+1. Additionally, I segregate my pipes by blend type, so what I plan to smoke is the first decision, then the pipe kind of follows from that.

I have a pipe stand that holds 6 pipes, and a pipe rest I keep at my desk. I try to rotate most of the pipes for others every week. Some might stay on the rack if I really feel like I might want to smoke them again. Before I added that stand my choice was totally random, but I had pipes I enjoyed smoking somehow not getting touched. Changing my rotation, weekly, has helped me revisit some favorites and keeps me from neglecting my other pipes.

I don't. Though I don't reach for a cob if I'm wearing a suit –that's about the only 'rule', and I've 'broken' it if I'm wearing a winter jacket that keeps the suit unseen.

I keep pipes I have smoked that need clean in one spot and pipes that are ready to smoke in another. I don't select pipes per se. I just randomly grab one unless I'm working in the yard, then I'll grab a cob.

    Randomly

I will pick a pipe to smoke for the week and usually, not always, will swap it for another the next week.

I have a 7 day set of Longchamp pipes which I reserve as my Sunday pipes. I'll smoke all 7 each Sunday and then they go back in their Longchamp case for a week. Other then Sunday I'll just pick a pipe that interests me. Usually a Falcon or cob.

For the last 7-8 years I have been smoking the same pipe as my first smoke of the day. After that, I just go by feel. I look over my rack of a dozen pipes I keep on my desk and select the one that best suits what I'm wanting at that particular moment - each pipe smokes a little differently - During the week I may move some pipes to my other smoking pipe racks and pull out a few from there and put them in my desk rack (all are actually Lazy Susan style racks) and rotate that way. So, like most of the guys on this thread, its all random.

I dedicate a great many pipes either to particular blends or more often, particular genres. What I decide to smoke often dictates what pipe I will smoke. For many blends, I have several candidates and choose the one that interests me most at that moment.

No rules. I have some pipes that are lightweight and good for clenching while I'm driving or working and they get used most during the week. In the evenings or on weekends I'll rest them and use my larger, heavier pipes.

Smoking is one of the leading causes of all statistics.

I have two categories for pipes; pipes for Latakia mixtures and pipes for all other toabccos. Past that, it is completely random. Whatever pipe in my rack or drawer that catches my eye at that moment, is the one that gets smoked.

For the week? Only if I am traveling, and then I grab 10-12 pipes of various sizes. Otherwise, it's "Oh, right now, I'll grab that one", each time I go for a smoke.

All of my pipes are entered into a comprehensive database. The pipe's parameters (weight, briar density, style, origin of briar, origin of pipe carving, stem material, price paid, current value, price paid:current value ratio, brand, artisan, etc., etc., etc.,) are recorded, and then a "theme of the week" is established. The possibilities, while not endless, are certainly numerous. This week, I'm smoking pipes from Lithuania with acrylic stems that were carved by an artisan under the age of 40 who's first name begins with a letter in the last third of the alphabet and who has at least two cats and one pet gerbil.

Selecting tobacco blends is a bit more complex.

I dedicate pipes a certain genre of blend. I ponder over what tobacco I'm going to smoke for about 2 to 3 seconds, then ponder another 2 to 3 seconds over what pipe to smoke it in. I try not to over think it.

Mood mostly, and sometimes Function. I have a Brigham 39 with a large chamber which I select whenever I want a longer smoke, or when I wish to avoid refilling while on foot. Other than that, most all of my pipes are relatively similar in chamber size, so those just go through a days rest after a day of smoking them. I will say that I ALWAYS keep my well-worn MM Legend, an old pouch of PA, and 2 spare lighters either in my coat, or in my car, whenever I go out of the house - regardless of what pipes and tabaks I am actually working that day. - Sherm Natman

Some periods of the day, I have a set rotation weekly for pipes I always wish to smoke once per week. Other periods of the day the rotation changes weekly, but, for those, I typically decide at the start of the week which pipes I plan to some at that time that week.

I dedicate all of my pipes so I pick a tobacco first then the pipe. I have numerous pipes for say the Virginia flake category and I also have some pipes that are blend specific.

There are times though when I want to smoke a specific pipe and I just grab a blend that goes with it.

Once in a great while I'll give the choice some thought, like a full bent Pete for a road trip.

The vast majority of the time, I just grab the next one on the rack and smoke it all day, sometimes for two or three days when I'm taking it easy. My "routine" rack is a dozen pipes all the same brand and shape.
