I just talked to a shop owner who said this is the first time in 15 years that he has been sold out of ALL Esoterica blends. I have heard others bemoaning the fact that blends that were easily available a year ago now sell out in minutes. I have experienced the same with some of my favorites. Without getting of the semantics of 'cellaring' v.s. 'hoarding', I thought it might be interesting to discuss the current trend in tobacco buying. Are there more people buying up tobacco than previously? Are the dedicated hoarders stockpiling more than before? Will this trend follow the recent ammunition hoarding? Will we hit a 'ceiling' where stockpiling will drop off?

I think individuals have always cellared tobacco to some degree, although I do agree it is now my prevalent than ever before. I attribute it to the possibility of further taxation, laws, or other various nuisances that people are predicting for pipe tobacco. People just want to protect themselves from these things.

To a lesser degree as well, I think the proliferation of web retailers and websites like pipesmagazine is a big reason for people buying so much tobacco. It's so easy to order more tobacco, hear about new blends, read reviews, talk to others about it whereas before the net a lot of people relied on word of mouth, and perhaps the odd periodical to decide which tobacco to buy.

Drifter, I found this old thread from MLC. It amazes me how much the price(value?) of tobacco has increased in the last 12 years. Look at those prices. For me $10 spent today on a tin is $20 I won't have to spend in ten years. If I quit, or die or whatever, those tins will be worth more than what I paid for them. To me, its an investment......or thats what I keep telling myself to justify this sad sickness I have..............

I just like buying tobacco :)
More than anything it's a matter of getting enough supply to last me as price increases with taxes and FDA regs are a reality on the horizon.
I'm not keeping a strict count of how many pounds I have as right now I'm just adding to the pile when my budget allows. I do need to sit down and inventory out the whole lot at some point. I'm sure I'm not too far from 100 lbs at this point.

I'll be curious to see what happens to buying habits if this tax increase does hit.

I think it is safe to assume people who have cellars will stop buying all together. So it will be up to the noob's to keep the tobacco market alive.

Beefeater, that is an interesting list. Can you imagine paying 7.00 for a tin of Penzance today? Or 5.00 for a tin of FVF? 8O

Drifter- Gotta give credit to MLC, he dug it up a year ago! Yeah, that list opened my eyes a bit. I do put money in a retirement account, but damn, maybe I'd be better off cellaring some more!! LOL! On a more serious note though, I really do think we're heading the way of Canada, Australia etc.. as far as tobacco products go--- the writing's on the wall its just a question of when IMO. This stuff ain't gonna get any cheaper than now-- I really do believe that.

FDA. Have you noticed more online retailer deals lately? 20% off the whole entire site? Tobaccos that never went on sale all of a sudden on sale? Rumor has it the manufacturers behind the sales in order to clear out warehouses of inventory before the FDA makes is draconian ruling.

Granted, I am not an economist. I mostly buy from online retailers because of their variety, and the price breaks and shipping discounts at certain points. However, I found some tobaccos recently at a local B&M that I wanted to try and purchased them there. Given the markup and taxes, I payed a little more that I would have by mail order, but at a certain point I think it would even out. I think internet taxes may cause a shift in buying habits that could benefit the B&M shops. I don't wish more taxes on anyone, but if it's coming, the local shops may benefit.

As far as the hoarders go, the axiom of tobacco never being any cheaper than it is now is still in force. I don't relish the thought of spending more, no one does, but I have to look at the positives.

If those numbers are from 2002, then it is interesting to observe that the cumulative inflation in the US since 2002 is 32.4%. In other words, $1.32 in 2014 has the same buying power as a $1.00 did in 2002.
It looks like the pricing on most of the blends have outpaced inflation.

Ask yourself this: which do you have more of stored away for the future - Food or Tobacco? I hate to admit it, but I have more tobacco stored away. Some "Doomsday Prepper" I am.
Don't tell my wife.

Stocking up on blends is far more fun than going to the grocery store and collecting tins and cans of Spam, tuna, beans, spinach, powdered milk, etc.
"Totally scored today! Bought the entire shelf of Spam and also got some big cans of kidney beans."
"Way to go! You beat me to it, I went and they told me they had just sold out of Spam. Next time you SOB! Lol. Congrats, man."
Do preppers talk like this on their forums?

I tend to just keep about 2 pounds of my favorites and the rest all seems to be filling up rather quickly with PTOM Club stuff and random bulk my fiance' gets for the B&M for special occasions (i.e. stuff she thinks will smell good.) I really only cellar 3 tin blends and 2 bulk belnds. I have a few tubs of OTC stuff which seem like they will last virtually forever. I managed to get a tub of sugar barrel before they disappeared, but I missed out on my beloved walnut.

In my own, limited, way I've begun cellaring for long-term use. I don't smoke a tonne, but I do have blends that I like, and that I think will age well. I also know that tobacco will never be cheaper for me than it is right now. So, it's prudent for me to pick up a few tins now and again to put away for a rainy day. I won't ever achieve the legendary Peck/Harris-Gambit levels, but I also don't anticipate needing those volumes. If you want to have a chuckle, check out my teeny little cellar at http://www.tobaccocellar.com/index.cfm?action=Cellar&fViewStatusID=3

Given the trends of taxation and regulation, its certainly understandable that pipe tobacco enthusiasts would want to stock up as much as their budget allows. While my budget has been limited of late, I certainly don't begrudge anyone stocking up to their heart's content. It's just the smart thing to do. Fortunately, we are truly living in the Golden Age of pipe tobacco, and there are plenty of outstanding back-up blends for anyone who finds their favorite out of stock.
