Has anybody tried this variety of leaf? It comes from Java originally, and was later grown in Bosnia.

They produced cigarettes with it, which Stalin famously crushed and packed in his pipe.

Apparently it must be quite strong.

There are a few online auctions in Ukraine and Russian that have people selling antique packs of those, aside of that, they are unavailable.
Also, there are some on ebay selling seeds, I wonder if there are any fellow pipe smokers out there who grew those already?

I just checked heirloom tobacco and nothing there but you might contact him anyway. He may know of something close or know who has it.

Unfortunately, I can't help you with acquiring seeds or a pack, but I am looking for a pack of these for myself. I like any tobacciana from old Yougoslavia. That's where my parents are from. I'm also on the hunt for an old pack of Kretek Cigarettes. I believe they are the original clove cigarettes. I don't think Kretek has a thing to do with old Yougoslavia but the name is only one letter off from my last name.
There is a tobacco growers forum....

fairtradetobacco.com

Someone on there may be of some assistance as far as the seeds you are seeking.
Hope that helps. Good luck.

They do have some on their auctions, if you happen to visit Ukraine.

Baku, Azerbaijan
I have no idea about Herzegovina Flor and I don't know how Ява (Java or Yava) in the link related to it, but I've heard a lot about Java cigarettes. They were one of the available cigarettes here in Azerbaijan during the Soviet times. Old timers were always saying how harsh it was and you had to leave a part of your lung after smoking it.

Sounds about right,

Are those cigarettes still available there?

People smoked away their blues under Tito, who was a brutal leader capable of so terrifying his subjects that all the warring factions kept peace just to survive. Not my idea of a happy state, but when Tito died, the wars began. Even the Soviets left him alone, since he represented stability in his region.
For tobacco off the beaten track, I recommend Belgium's Tabac-Manil Semois, thick or medium cut, a burley variant. It's available and a strong but palatable smoke.

Yes, I know the cigarettes you are speaking of. They look roughly the same as the ones in the post, but the pack is a dirty white with some blue written on it .. Never tried them before, just read about them ..

mso older people in the now Republic of Serbia speak highly of tito. They say they were contempt with their lives and welfare during his time, as long as you stayed withing the rules. Tito was also very Liberal in his politics, he allowed Serbs to emigrate without repercussions. Many returned with money and lead a prosperous live, but again not enjoying every freedom. I am not trying to say that dictatorships could be a good for of government, all I am saying is that mentalities were somewhat different during the socialist yugoslav federation

madox', I think dictators sometimes gain approval, partly because that is a way to survive under their authority, but also because the dictator looks more predictable and less dangerous than other factions in the region. Yugoslavia had an uncertain peace, but it was a sort of peace comparatively speaking. Many Russians seem to pine for "the good old days" under Soviet rule, despite the hardships. I guess it is sort of "compared to what?" I have to admire peoples' brave resilience under hard conditions.

wyfbane I think the croats held him in high esteem - Tito being a croat himself, invested heavily in croatian infrastructure and tourism venues. Slovenians were so distant from the whole Yugoslav ethnic issue that they have seceded the federation within a week of the conflict, and with NATO support nobody dared intervene. Let's not mix two issues here - one is Tito's socialist Yugoslavia, and the other is the Serbian civil wars. While Tito was the glue that held an unstable federation together, this instability was the weakness exploited by foreign powers in the aftermath of his death, and not Tito's iron grip on the country. In truth Tito is a ww2 hero of the Serbian people, that has distanced the nation from the undesired Stalinist shadow. When he was alive, the symbol he represented was so strong for all groups, be that catholic, Muslim, or orthodox, that the dividing issues could not be exploited neither by domestic interests or foreign powers.

People had a higher standard of living under Tito. All of them. There was no religious freedom. But there also was no corruption that effected people's daily lives.....like here in the U.S.
