Just received a Herter's angler pipe and am in the process of cleaning.Upon removing the stem I notic metal filter device in the stem. Is this removable? this filter is dirty. What is the best way to clean this?

Thanks

Sounds like it might have a "stinger". It should be removable, some screw in, others are push/pull style. At least in my experience.
Some people smoke the pipes without the stingers, others keep them in. I have a couple pipes with stingers that still allow me to pass a pipe cleaner all the way to the bowl, most do not, that I use in tact. All other pipes that came with stingers, I removed and smoked the Pipe without.

Just come in from my shop.I did manage to get the filter off.I have never seen one like this before. Its an al uminum tube with a hole through the side. This is the cap that slides over an aluminum tube . I am thinking this is a filter of sorts. Thanks northernneil for the info. These stingers you mentioned are they like a screw with a slot cut through the length of it?
