I picked up a dunhill today and I'm looking for some help with the stampings. It has dunhill bruyere on one side and the other has a k with star, made in England followed by a 6 and a circled 4 with an A

K = Apple shape

6 could indicate made in 1956 or 1966

4 in a circle is a group 4 size

A is the code for Bruyere finish

The star is rumored to mean that the pipe was made for the French market. There’s a thread here on the subject if someone more savvy than me can link to it. Otherwise, Don is spot on.

If the 6 is underlined, it’ll be 1956. If it’s about the same size as the word England, and not underlined, it’s 1966.

Ok. So theres no way to know if its 56 or 66? Also looking again I've noticed what appears to be a very small 5 in the center by itself

The way to tell is by the underline. There are other little details to aid, but the underline or not is pretty conclusive on its own.

According to pipephil.eu, some of the pipes from the 1950s lack the underline. I saw one Sunday at the Chicago Show. Clearly smaller superscripted number, but not underlined.
