I use to have a list of favorites but these days I like to buy one thing, smoke a bunch of it and move on to the next. Right now that one thing is Fillmore, perviously it was St James Flake.
You know, your idea for this thread reminds me of a high school story. Back in the late 80's when those "personality" test's were starting to circulate, we had a testing group come to campus and on our lunch break we could fill out the questionnaire. Later our answers would be tabulated and compared to those of the opposite sex and matched up. So, I did the above and was later given a card with a bunch of id numbers and a % ranking. Essentially, internet dating, pre-internet.
Anyway, I had a 97% match. We agreed through the group to meet at lunch one day both expecting to find our soulmates. Well, when we finally met she was wearing Lee Jeans. Yeah, she was super cute and all and we had almost everything in common but...WTF? I mean seriously, who wears Lee in LA? It was as discordant as Angelina Jolie opening her mouth and hearing Barry White's voice. Nowhere in the questionnaire was there anything about jean's preference. So the entire exercise was utterly pointless.
One of the things about pipe smoking that has surprised me is how quickly and erratically my taste seem to change. From what I can see on the forums, this is common. My suggestion to you is to try a few things from a few different categories of pipe tobacco and see what interests you. I think the following are some really great blends and excellent examples of what the respective categories are all about; FVF, SJF, Skiff and Irish Flake.
