Yes I put from in quotation marks so it does not goes as a typo But here is the deal/question I have been smoking pipe for over one year now and I know all the re-light issue that comes with smoking pipe. However since I bought my calabash gourd pipe I only have to re-light once or twice (if that)and most of the time is when I neglect to puff it for a long while. Now the Tobacco that I have used in this pipe are tobacco that I have had for months in a jar. Question is the pipe, or the tobacco which is probably well dried (almost too dry)

    Thank you

It's what You like. I know I like Mine to be dry, some don't. It's what works for You.

OK, but is the gourd helping to keep the pipe lit for so long? because that does not happens with the rest of my briar pipes

I think not, I think it is the shape of the bowl. I have a really large church that will stay lit for days, well seems like it, but it has a very deep narrowing bowl from the top (large) to the bottom (narrow), like a calabash.

How about some pipe carvers piping in, OK I did say that. Does this sound correct?

It could be that the Meer insert of the calabash acts as a little oven and evenly warms up the backy and distributes heat so well that it helps to keep your backy dry in the pipe.

Everyone here who smokes Meers tends to agree that they often smoke much easier than briar pipes. Hopefully you will get a more experienced answer. This is just a guess from what I remember reading from these forums.

I would say it is probably a combination of both. Everyone does things differently and you happen to have found what works for you. I would suggest you get another similarly shaped pipe and see if you get the same results. And again with a pipe of a completely different shape. It is all about trial and error.

I know I have some pipes that I am not too careful with. I just load and go and I always get a good long smoke. My higher end pipes that I try to be careful with end up giving me problems because I am over thinking it.

Could be the meerschaum, but i doubt it, probably the dry tobacco

Since the shape or geometry of the bowl has been mentioned; I thought that I would resurrect a link first posted by Romeowood some time back:

I would speculate that since the gourd calabash smokes so coolly both on the tongue and in the hand,
you are puffing more vigorously without the usual restraints (or feedback). This may be why you require
fewer re-lights. pipeinhand's idea sounds pretty good too because the calabash's bowl shape and
    draft hole position are unique.

Thank you so much you guys.

@Lawrence: What an academic article I loved it. When I first started those reading did not make sense to me whatsoever, but now it so much easy to understand. One of my favorite tobacco is McClelland Legend, and since I like it a lot I smoke it in a Savinelli Tevere because it has a big chamber and I can put more tobacco and enjoy more. That is a perfect example of what the article is all about. Thank you again.

I have found it the same on the 2 calabash pipes that I smoke and always thought it was because the draft hole is in the centre at the bottom of the meerschaum insert that aids a more even smoke.

Hmmm...why not, I will investigate a little about that. It make sense, with the hole in the center it could create a tornado effect that allow the air to flow constantly in a circular motion.
