Thanks ash and sable. I once heard that when SuperGrain is written above the KAYWOODIE, it means that it's an early production (although I'm not sure what "early" exactly indicates). Does that not apply to this piece? Also, while I bought this to smoke it thoroughly, I'm still curious if it has any collectible value. Still lamenting over my reckless bid...

Define overpaid?
I'm thinking 50s or 60s. It looks like my Kaywoodie Stembiter (except for the stem) and it looks pretty clean - like its never been smoked.
I probably would have paid $30 - $40 for it if its never been smoked.

Looks like DRINKLESS on the stinger - a tad earlier than the 50 - 60's. I would guess around the mid 40's. Stinger is the smaller variety which I believe negates pre WWII.

@pappymac omg... it is definitely unsmoked, with all the original packaging, but a LOT more than that. I should stay away from eBay until I get more knowledgeable. Thanks for the input pappy and pete.

Here
I've over and under paid for pipes, rifles, bikes, food, just about everything......
If it brings you the enjoyment and use you hoped for, then you did fine.
It's a nice looker. Hopefully, its performance is equally impressive.

Thanks Jay and sable for the help! Never had a pipe with a stinger before. What's the general consensus on the performance of these stingers? Of course my MMV, but still...

What's the general consensus on the performance of these stingers?
Most of my older / vintage pipes with stingers still have them and smoke fine. There are a few, only a couple, with removable stingers that smoke much better without and I do remove them to smoke.
That pipes a real beauty, I can see the attraction to it

Thanks for the compliments! Maybe I'll just keep the stinger for a few bowls and then decide.

I dated a Kaywoodie for a while, but she didn't smoke up to me. Oh, sorry. Really nice pipe. Overpaid? Pipes are a lifetime purchase, often, so no worry.

Kay gave me a woodie*, but that was long ago in a different state and State. We dated for just a week or two.
* One of those classic Fords with wood panelling on the exterior.

33 was a large apple between 1933 and 1972. This doesn't have the 4 digit shape, so that places it after 1939 or so. The smaller size stinger with only "Drinkless" and no numbers puts it around WWII, but old stingers were used for awhile. So without consulting Bill, I'd guess this is a late forties or early fifties.

Thanks! I forgot that I could consult el Presidente himself... that seems to be the best thing to do.

The apple shape of the Anniversary Pipes looks a lot like the 33. Maybe it's being revived?
