    Hi everyone!

Just wanted to say hello since this is my first real post here. My name is Eddy, I'm 29 years old and from Germany. I'm living in Marburg in Hessia and I just finished my final exams.. So I'm going to become a teacher in politics and philosophy within the next... two years.. By the way, I'm a big fan of the U.S. (most Germans at my age aren't..) and I'm going to visit California in April or in July for three weeks.. I have been to LA and SF already, that was four years ago. This time I'll be there as a pipe smoker also and I'm really looking forward to spend some money on the beautiful American tobaccos.

I'm smoking pipes for 3 1/2 years now and there already were times when I had a collection of 30 pieces. But since I only smoke one or two bowls a day I decided to reduce my collection and sold nearly all of my pipes. Then I started to rebuild my collection with a focus on smaller handmade pipes. Right now, I'm back to 15 pipes again, ten of them are "handmade" or "freehands", however you want to call it, and I still got 5 nice English classics. Here is a photo of my collection, if you are interested:

    Cheers! Eddy

Nice collection there, I'm curious about the second from the top on the left hand side & third from the bottom on the right. Who makes them? They're very nice.

Hi Paul! With K-town, do you mean Köln/Cologne? Cologne perhaps offers the biggest pipe shop in the world. I hope you visited it Marburg is in Hessia, pretty much in the middle of the country, near Frankfurt.

Hi Ulrich! You mean the two bamboos? The short bamboo on the left is a Chonowitsch and the longer one right is a J. Alan pipe. Don't ask me how I got the Jess Chonowitsch thing.. I didn't buy it... Was a very kind trade with a good friend of mine.

Yeah pawpaw.. I know about California and the smoking issue.. Four years ago I had the feeling I was the only cigarette smoker there At least the only one who rolled his own cigarettes.. The problem with the U.S. for me is: it is soo big and there are so many places I would love to visit! And one of them is Louisiana, definately.. (I watched all the seasons of True Blood and I simply love the countryside and everything that is pictured there. Well except of the vampires, werewolfs, etc. :D).. And I wanted to visit Vegas as well. It might all be too much for three or four weeks? But I definately am going to rent a car and hit the road after some days in LA..

Velcome, I bet you know good beer like you know your smokers.

If you can't pack it, light it, and smoke it then why do it. It's a dieing art that must be rekindled in all of us as fortold by our forefathers.

My bad, I couldn't remember the town name off the top of my head, I was closer to Trier...oh, got it, K-town I meant Kaiserslautern.

Not trying to put words into Pauls...er...fingers...but I think K-Town = Kaiserslautern. I have been there as well as a few other places like Trier. I loved it
Mardi Gras is coming up quick. If you're going to Louisianan that would probably be a good time to do it And you'd go through TX getting there probably so it's a win/win situation.

No, my name is spelled 'Luxury Yacht' but it's actually pronounced 'Throatwobbler Mangrove'.

Trier was a blast, I personally loved the Roman Bath houses.

LA to NO is about 35 hours of driving... But it is an amazing drive !
I know Kaiserslautern because a German Butcher here in Dallas emigrated from there in the 1950's.
His family owned the butchershop in Kaiserslautern since 1728, and opened one up here as well.

    Eddy,

    Herzlich Wilkommen !

Nice collection and you will find this forum to be really helpful. Myself, transported Belgian to Texas since 1997. This is now home..

Perhaps some points of reference to help you out planning your vacation. I'll send you a private message with my email address. Feel free to send me an email if you need advice, directions, help, etc..

If you're flying to LA, drive up to Vegas is not too bad. It's about what you would say, a 5 - 6 hour drive, depending on the stops you make.

Vegas to Dallas is roughly 1,200 miles or 20 hours. If you drive only 5 or 6 day, with stops perhaps, it'll take you four days. When I first moved here, driving from Dallas to Berea, KY is about 900 miles and would take me two days of about 8 hours driving. Now, I'm more used to the long hauls, but 8 hours remains a comfortable drive for a day. I regularly take a 450 mile trip (7-8 hours) down to the Texas Coast to go fishing.

The US is big.... very big.... as Europeans we really have no concept until we start driving around here. I have family in Kentucky (17 hours), Colorado (15 hours). You get used to it

Once again, welcome on board, have a seat, buckle up and enjoy the ride.

"The fact is, squire, the moment a man takes to a pipe, he becomes a philosopher. It's the poor man's friend; it calms the mind, soothes the temper, and makes a man patient under difficulties. It has made more good men, good husbands, kind masters, indulgent fathers, than any other blessed thing on this universal earth."

L.A to La is a good two full day car ride . Please vist New Orleans in the fall or winter . Summers in the south are hot and humid . With giant bugs trying to eat you . Those are great pipes you have there .

If you're in the Dallas area, Two Brothers cigars is a great place to smoke! It's in downtown Plano, actually and near a great Austrian restaurant owned by a great guy named Jorg.

Mick, funny you mention that. I spent enough time out in Germany with my niece that I would get to know the locals. I don't know how many of them planned to go to New York City then drive down to Orlando and Disney World all on the same 10 day holiday.

Not that it is totally impossible, but many changed their mind when they found out that it's about a 20 hour drive.

On the other hand, what surprised me was from even in the no-mans land I stayed in Germany, a good 3-9 hours drive, I could be any where from Brussels, Amsterdam, Masstricht, Paris, and the Normandy Coast as well as points in Italy.

I live about 60 miles west of Philly, you could drive 8 hours further west, still not be out of PA and still not be anywhere or see anything.

    Paul: true that !

Funny enough, the same applies here when I tell stories that I used to go hang out in the South of France, or go ski in Austria, climb mountains in Switzerland or have good food and vacations in Italy. All within a 10 hour drive. My hometown to Paris: 3 hour drive. I hate the place, my wife loves it.. go figure

Good morning everyone and thanks again for the kind welcome!! Especially your barbecue (that's no barbecue, that's the best looking piece of meat I have ever seen), off road driving and high power (!!) rifle shooting offer is great. Would love to do that. You are very kind everyone. That's what I had learned in my two-week-visit some years ago already: most of the Americans are so unbelievably helpful and friendly!

    Oh eddy..

What we called "barbecue" in Europe is really grilling.

Barbeque: low temperature, slow cooking, usually with smoke, long time, vender tender meat
Grilling: high heat, shorter periods of time.

My pork shoulders goes in my smoker for 18 hours, my brisket (beef like the pic from Lonestar) 8 hours

If we do the gun thing, I'll bring my AK and we can pulverize some watermelons.

I'll bring a Saiga 12 and we can pulverize washing machines...

My friend has a Saiga. I think the thing you're most likely to pulverize is your shoulder
Right now this is the pride of my collection (on the rifle side anyway):

Edit: that pic was taken before I got the BUIS on there.
