I don't recall ever seeing a mirror finish in any of the shops I've frequented. Glossy? Yes, particularly if they are dusted frequently and wiped down while on display, And, I've not seen any of the "varnished" pipes which appear now and then. I lead a very sheltered life.

Glossy finish is one genre, and it is not always achieved the same way -- wax and varnish are but two. But many other natural, matte, non-glossy blast, rustications of various types finished various ways ... and much much more. Have there always been glossy pipes? Maybe not always, but going back a century or two. But only some pipes, not all, not by a long shot. The question makes it sound like you haven't been around pipes much, but the answer is no.

I haven't been around pipes much. My exposure before this past year was from the pipes given to me when my grandfather and father passed. Never bought a new pipe. But I see a lot of highly polished and varnished pipes today. Just curiosity.
