Title says it all. My MM Great Dane has spots. They didn't used to be there. Now they are. Anyone else have this happen?
I tried rubbing them with some spit and my thumb and it made no difference at all. I'm assuming it's the nicotine soaking into the cob from the inside?
Any insight is appreciated. Pic included.

I'd say combo of Nic and smokin a little hot. Just an old cob smokers thoughts...

I agree Weezell ... some Cobs seem more prone than others to this but it doesn't affect the smoking qualities.

One of my cobs developed one last week. I thought it was ash and tried to rub it off. Nope, permanent black spot. I tend to smoke it a little hot too. Just glad there was no kernel.

Popcorn-cob pipes ... Smoke and a snack!
I think you've hit on a great idea here, mayfair. Although perhaps they would be more popular among a different group of smokers

Those are just age spots. Smoke something that rewards a long slow journey into the abyss... like OJK!

If you are awaiting a sale to try Old Joe Krantz or Billy Budd, that's fine, but don't wait too long because you can already buy a pound of these for the equivalent of about $4.00 for a 2 oz. tin.

These bulk blends are delicious and nutritious.

That canine is adorable. I'll add to your sentiment: there is never an inappropriate time to order a few lbs of OJK.

I've got a Washigton with black spots like that. It was smoked hot for many months, so I think that was a definite factor.
Your Great Dane has the black spots where I would expect them to be, the bowl thickness being least in the middle.

Thanks for the replies and the pics of all the gorgeous canine friends ( I'm a dog lover myslef).
My order arrived today and included (among many other things) a a 1/4 lb of OJK for me to try out. It's really good. Like, REALLY good. I'm looking forward to smoking several more bowls and really discovering it to it's fullest.
Of course, as with most or the orders I get from P&C, so many new things to try :) it's gonna take a while.
I'll stop worrying about the spots on my Great Dane and just think of them like gray hairs ... well earned and a sign of experience :)
