i am very new to pipe smoking and just received my first two pipes. One a simple churchwarden and the other a Savinelli Florence Smooth Pipe. I researched some tobaccos and came across Grandma's Apple Pie from E.A. Carey's Smokeshop in Akron, Ohio.
Perhaps in is because the pipe is new, but I loaded a quarter bowl in the Savinelli as part of the break in. This tobacco was less than aromatic and my family thought the house was on fire. It smokes harsh and somewhat bitter. Absolutely no hint of any apple flavoring.
Am I missing something here?

Do you live near Akron? I live in NE Ohio and we could meet up. I'd share some stash with you so you could try out different types without spending major $$

That bitterness you taste may have to do with the bowl coating. Give it about a dozen more smokes and you'll have a better taste of the tobacco's true flavor. That said, many aromatics tend to smoke a bit harsh and you're likely experiencing a combination of 'new pipe' and 'aromatic'.
