For a while I have been bidding on pipes for a certain carver. Most of his pipes in the last couple months have a saddle stem rather than the tapered that I like. Thus I stopped bidding. Yesterday, he posted a pipe that fell into my acceptable range, so I bid. Afterwards, I realized it is not what I really wanted. But I was outbid within a few hours.
Hopefully, he will make another Rhodesian nosewarmer with a tapered stem with partial rustification. The freehand was OK, but not what I really, really wanted.
Once I win my dream pipe, then I will post pictures and tell you who the carver is. Why would I add to my completion?

Live and learn. I'm glad it ended well. I think we have to be self-disicplined and careful about

auction situations, since it is easy for the auction to become the focus of attention and the

pipe only secondary. The competition is so engaging, you aren't always clear on the pipe's

suitability in all ways. I really work at buying pipes, sometimes comparing and shopping for

months, even when I'm just after an American machine pipe. Often this produces really good

results, from my perspective. An auction is just more multi-tasking than works for me.

Winton, I bet you had a big sigh of relief when you were outbid. Glad it worked out for you. Have you looked at any of the online dealers for the artisan you are chasing? I have found a lot of my favorite artisan pipes at a number of them for very fair prices. Here is a list of the places I have bought from.

Cigrmaster, thanks for the list. I checked these sites, and they don't have this carver. Actually with the Chicago Pipe Show in about 3-4 weeks, I should be hoarding my cash. If I have any funds afterwards, I will keep looking.

I wasn't so lucky to be outbid on this:

It's coming with two other pipes, so maybe the sting won't be so bad.

I had never heard of Mixture 79 so I looked it up on tobaccoreviews.com.
First review: "If you were ever curious enough to wonder what it would be like to smoke a urinal cake, here you go."
Ha ha!

I've been to two big pipe shows, had some cash stashed and a week prior to each one, I found something I just had to have. Good luck on that plan!
