Hello all,
I've been interested in clay pipes for a while now. I've read a lot about their history, care, and a few things about the various health side effects that can come with using them. I think I'm finally ready to take the plunge and pick one or two up to try as they are now within my budget.
I've seen three sites consistently recommended from threads two-to-four years old, but didn't know if there had been any new developments or recommendations.
The three sites are as follows:

http://shop.pipeshoppe.com/shop-2/
http://www.dawnmist.org/pipesale.htm
http://www.lepeltier-pipes.com/index.html
*It is worth mentioning that Dawnmist Studio is not producing pipes until March 2015.
Who would you recommend ordering from?
Are clay pipes particularly vulnerable in the cold season?
Also, are there any really good tips for coating/covering the stem? I know that's an issue. I've read about people using wax, nail polish, sometimes a softy bit if they'll fit, but didn't know if there were any other ideas.
Thank you in advance.

I can't recommend anyone in particular because there are so many styles to choose from. I have ordered the

Civil War reed stemmed Pamplin pipes from the pipeshoppe though and am very happy with my order. As far as coating, I just melt a little beeswax and paint it on the end of the stem with a small paintbrush. I've also just dipped a paper towel into the molten beeswax and smeared it on the stem. Both methods work fine.
Remember, with a clay you have to hold it differently than any other pipe. If you hold it by the bowl it will burn off your fingers!

I bought an unsmoked 1930's Goedewaagen clay pipe earlier this year. It was neat a couple times for the experience but the draw is far too restricted for my tastes and as a result I never smoke it.

I love my Markus Fohr clay from Pipeshoppe. The tip is glazed to reduce some of the clay taste you get.

Friends, I found the fine Gambier catalogs recently. Very interestingly and informatively.
