I just received my new MacArthur Cob and noticed that it doesn't resemble the Cob in any of his photos. The Cob in his Photo has a tapered bowl and the stem is located above center. The Cob that MM sells is a straight bowl and the stem is located below center. On the MM site they state that the pipe they sell is designed according to MacArthurs specifications. How can that be? This pipe doesn't look at all like the one in his photos.

No it don't look like it at all. It's most likely hard to work with a cob.

This little fun fact from history.com's MacArthur page

One of General Douglas MacArthur's trademarks was his corncob pipe. The Missouri Meerschaum Company, in business in Washington, Missouri, since 1869, made MacArthur's pipes to his specifications. The company continues to produce a corncob pipe in his honor.

So perhaps at one time they made them to his specs but now make this model " in his honor " ..........

Don't know what else to tell ya

The " Bonus Army " March of 1932 incident has obviously never sat well with me, I'd assume with anyone really. But that MacArthur led the charge has stained the man's reputation for me personally.

Now I leave it at that in hopes that this does not escalate into political debating. I'm only providing a link to something that happened and read up on it if you'd like but I do not wish to further discuss it or promote discussion of it here.

I distinctly remember reading somewhere that the cob wasnt good enough to makethe bowl that deep, or the machines werent or something of that like.

The thing is I also remember reading somewhere that his pipe was too difficult to produce on a grand scale, so they make this one, its one or the other

Congress seems to believe that 'Children are our future' is a phrase coined by tobacco advertisers.

Well I was just curious, no big deal. Regardless of the shape, with its 3" deep bowl it sure produces a long, cool, and dry smoke.

I have a few real Macarthurs, been a long time since they made them that way (dont know how long).
One big difference is the reed stem on the original. Thats all it is, one big ass reed and no mouthpiece.
I'm thinking the change came because they couldnt get the reeds anymore.
For $30 I will sell you one of my unsmoked original with reed stem (looks just like your pics)

I just picked up one of the new model MM bent "MacArthur" cobbys and you can tell by comparison to the photos of the General that his bowl was a lot shallower. The poker style pipe he smokes has the bore hole half or less of the full depth of the pipe down so the chamber was not that deep. On the new Mac's the bowl is a good 3" deep which I would say is much deeper than any of the pipes MacArthur Smoked even though they look to be deep bowls due to the poker style. Any cob below the bore hole is solid as you could not smoke a pipe past the bore hole.

Flyfishing, thanks for that link - it was a very interesting and disturbing read.
