GBD Pipe First Branded Pipe in Existence Oppenheimer Claims
The pipe industry in France prior to 1852 was devoted to the manufacture of clay pipes
In that year Ganneval Bondier & Donninger founders of the GBD establishment introduced the manufacture of meerschaum pipes in France
Again in 1885 they introduced another new material in pipe making the briar root
The early success of this material for pipes is noted in the memoirs of one of the founders
This pioneer in new fields of pipe manufacture wrote - The use of briar root for manufacturing pipes was attended with the happiest results it being smooth to the palate the first time of smoking is light in the mouth does not burn by the combustion of the tobacco and is in fact the most hygienic the most pleasant and the cheapest of any known kind of pipe
Messrs A Oppenheimer & Co are justly proud to claim for the pipe that it is the first branded pipe in existence and they also claim to the honor of making the first importation of briar pipes from Europe to the United States
GBD pipes represent the very highest that can be procured in material and workmanship and wherever they have been exhibited they have always carried off high awards and honors
GBD pipes are in great demand all over the world and in fact so great is the demand that two factories in France and one in England are not able to cope with it
The New York Branch of A Oppenheimer & Co at 45 John Street is under the able management of HS Lederer favorably known from Coast to Coast
A complete stock of GBD pipes in both Italian and French finish is always on hand in New York
The following are some of the brands all manufactured by the GBD factory that are also carried in stock in New York Marcee de Luxe, City de Luxe, The City, AOC, Keystone, Rifler, Finsbury Lovat and Old Pal
A complete line of tobacco pouches cigar and cigarette tubes smokers requisites and novelties is also carried in the New York office
Messrs A Oppenheimer & Co call attention to their long shank GBD briars with short amber or vulcanite mouthpieces which are great favorites with the Irish pipe smoker and it is a well established fact that wherever you find an Irishman you will find a GBD pipe smoker
These GBD Irish Shapes are in great demand all over the United States and their sale is steadily increasing from month to month
Messrs A Oppenheimer & Co's great display of GBD pipes at the recent tobacco show in London England excited favorable comment and their booth was examined by thousands of enthusiastic visitors including a great many celebrities
The proud claim of Messrs A Oppenheimer & Co is that their GBD pipes have been unrivalled for over half a century and they have adopted the very fitting slogan The Pipe with a Pedigree

...if you're going to browse/read, the zoom feature helps tremendously, the scissor snip feature doesn't carry over though and all snips come out rather small, the overall scan quality is pretty lousy as per usual with googbooks, of poor resolution and inattentive positioning, but it is indeed a wonderful resource regardless.
This entry is a particularly rich trove,

TOBACCO OF 1898 GOOD
As they were remodeling the warehouse which was used in the days of the Farmington canal, up in the third story, several workmen opened some heavy oak cases, which much their surprise contained plug marked 'Independent Navy Series of 1898'
The workmen pronounced it in the best of condition their verdict was that it was real mellow as it had aged in the wood twenty-four years

I wonder what became of that Warren Harding Dunhill set?
I was wondering the very same thing.
Perhaps in a museum somewhere?
Is there a Harding library?

...might be there if so.
If the set was kept all together, with the specially inscribed case, the provenance goes through the roof, and would have appeal to many other collectors besides just the pipe guys, it's something that you might expect someone to walk into Pawn Stars with and the bald guy would go nuts because he's a presidential collector himself --- pipes are the most intimate of personal artifacts, so the set would probably fetch a rather large sum I'd reckon!

Fascinating bit of pipe history, though the Oppenheimer claims about GBD are bunk. The use of briar root for making pipes was established in the 1850's and quite common by 1885. Loewe set up in the Haymarket in 1856 to sell briar pipes to the English. Barling was working with meerschaum in 1812, and was awarded a medallion for a set of sterling mounted meerschaum pipes at the Grear Exposition of 1851. I own a Beautiful Barling bent billiard fron 1882, 3 years before this article says that briar went into use. Gotta watch those advertising claims. Back then, there was no law regarding truth in advertising.

I did hear back from the Director of Harding Home in Marion, Ohio -
At the Harding Home in Marion, Ohio, there are four Dunhill items: three sample tins of pipe bowl preservative and a reamer.
The Smithsonian Institution presented the items to the Harding Memorial Association some time after President Warren G. Harding’s death. In 1979, the association dissolved and transferred the home and its contents to the Ohio History Connection. There is no documentation to prove that the above items were gifts from Alfred Dunhill. I cannot find any reference to the pipes or the presentation case.
There is only one complete pipe in the Harding collection, a Meerschaum pipe with a carved design of two American Indians. Harding kept it on his desk at the White House, but it is not known where he got it.
So, the whereabouts of that fine Dunhill set is unknown.
