...recently found this doc online and it has some great images of older GBD's.
The companion case sets are pretty incredible,

and they also list a particular peculiar favorite of mine, the all briar style pipe.
Good stuff.
Click the PDF link up top and you'll see pp.112-158 in all their Victorian glory.
I had to print it out on actual paper as from my past experiences,

sometimes stuff like this disappears off the web.

Awesome!
I'll take the little bent billiard with hallmarked band and two stems (vulcanite & amber) on Page 130. Or perhaps one of those reading pipes with goosequill extension stems.

goosequill.
Never seen that used as a stem before.
What is it?
Those elaborate travelling sets are amazing!

Three shillings for a large bent billiard. Getting on for a weeks pay in those days!

Suggestion; Could you repost this in the GBD collectors thread. It's a wonderful resource and that would make it easy to find. You do come up with the most wonderful archive material. I always read your posts. Dutch

Nice, but I don't need to look at pictures, MLC. I have a complete mint-new unsmoked set of everything seen on those pages laid out on tables in my 40 acre collection room. (Along with every other pre-WWII major brand catalog ever published, of course).
And no, I'm not one of those snobby "don't touch" guys... I keep a duplicate smoking set of everything in my other 40 acre collection room.

I think maybe this is the very definition of a "pipe dream"...

Yesh my good man, I do most distinctly recall your poverty-stricken anti-opulence on last visit and I still scoff at you for refusing to take my $50 gift-offering so at least you'd have a little cash on hand, old boy.
By the way, I am so regretfully sorry to have ruined that gorgeous ostrich-skin settee by inadvertently spilling some of that '48 vintage Chardonnay all upon it, I do hope that your wait staff was readily able to sort that mess out.
Please still do keep me in mind if you ever do decide to relinquish your catalogue ephemera collection, as small and as tatty as it is, for I do have a few gaps which I need to fill, and chin up cheerio my good man --- perhaps you will take me up on my offer to go wintering at the Côte d'Azur and that would most certainly perhaps ease the pain of your dwelling in that awfully somber small flat that you call a "home", really, I just can't see how you can stand it.
Jolly smoggo!
Keep the faith!
Mr. LC Esq. III

What a great letter (dated Aug. 27, 1891) on page 126. Reminds me of a lawsuit brought against W.C. Fields when he used (without permission) some jokes sent to him by a fan.

Unless I'm reading it wrong, the GBD LBB is yet still cheaper than a 50 box of Teofani King's Own ciggies (at 6/3) ~ slight sidetrack: no wonder why Woodbines were so popular! ~, which would have quickly gone up in smoke like such the daydreams of fair-haired maidens wrappring their warm arms around you and whispering sweet love-things quietly in your ear along with soft nibbles on the lobe...

ah, distracted for a moment there LOL
That three bob GBD would last a lifetime!
A wise investment,

and yet another reason why, in terms of smoking enjoyments, it's best to be a pipeman!

Catalogs!?
Dear me, that would never do. The eighty acres under roof is filled with pipes, my good man.
If I want something to read I'll have one of the staff bring me an original Shakespeare manuscript from the ten acre library that's adjacent to the pipe room.

The eighty acres under roof is filled with pipes, my good man.
To each his own I always say.
If you want to collect all those horrid little no-name St. Claude French pipes that are so obnoxiously abundant,

then that's all boffo keen with me old chap!

Thanks for this. A resource on Victorian-era briars is something I've been Googling for without success for some time.

Just got this match holder on eBay. Looks a lot like one on page 41 of the linked PDF...

I was interested to see the Morrel Mackenzie pipe on page 126. I have one stamped with that name, though I think it's not as old as that catalog.
